Isabel Brightman Trozzo
December 22, 1917 – December 1, 2020
Isabel passed away peacefully in Nelson, BC on December 1, 2020, 21 days shy of her 103rd birthday. She was born December 22, 1917 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Hunter and May Adie. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Louis Trozzo in 1982.
Isabel was an amazing, bright and considerate soul who lived a rather extraordinary life. She started her teaching career in the small community of Appledale where she met the Trozzo family and her future husband, Joe whom she married August 24, 1946.
Joe and Isabel moved to Nelson where she taught French and Latin at Trafalgar Secondary School until she retired. During her career, she was eager to expand her knowledge of languages and in 1962, moved with her young sons to Grenoble, France where they immersed themselves into the French culture while she studied French and Latin for a year.
Isabel was a humanitarian and an environmentalist and defended those causes passionately. Working beside Colleen McCrory, in 1991, she chained herself to a tree while protesting the logging to protect the Slocan Watershed. Throughout her life, she wrote thousands of letters to world leaders, Amnesty International and the Canadian government demanding the release of political prisoners and fair treatment of all Canadians. When she moved from her own home at the age of 100, she was still contributing financially to 12 different charities.
Having a deep commitment to healthy living (and no driver’s license), she walked everywhere, exercised daily and maintained a very healthy diet. Isabel also loved to swim and spent many summer days in Kootenay and Slocan Lakes.
She also had a deep appreciation for music and the arts and tried to attend every event presented at the Nelson Capitol Theatre. Reading about historical events and notable persons in history was a favorite past time as well.
Isabel is survived by sons Joe and Frank (Colleen), grandchildren; Loren (Janet), Aaron and Jessica, sister-in-law Marie Adie, and numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews as well as some very good friends. All of these, she loved and touched deeply.
She was the last of her generation in the Trozzo family and will be the last one to the “party upstairs”.
Rest well Isabel, you will be sadly missed, deeply loved and always remembered.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
