Ilda Lubӑne 2020

“She Dared to be Different, She Dared to be Herself”
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ilda Lubӑne (nee Birznieks) on April 18, 2020. She was predeceased by her sister Marta; brother-in-law Eric Kalnin; and nephew Charles Kalnin. “Aunty” is survived by nephew George Kalnin; and great-nephews and nieces, Christopher, Katherine, Noel and Melissa. She will also be greatly missed by Ross Bradley and her many friends, former students, visual arts colleagues, and members of the Latvian community.
Born in Liepaja, Latvia, she escaped the Russian invasion of her homeland during WWII, ending up as a prisoner of war in Germany. Following the war she emigrated to Canada settling in Edmonton where she worked as a physiotherapist at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. After studying at the Banff Centre and the University of the Americas in Mexico City she taught at the Banff School of Fine Art followed by the Faculty of Extension at the University of Alberta for which she offered classes throughout Alberta. She also conducted workshops in Saskatchewan, British Columbia and in Washington and California. A Life Member of the Alberta Society of Artists, she has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions throughout Alberta.
Many thanks to the staff of Extended Care Eaux Claire for their care and support of Ilda in the past 2 years. A Funeral Liturgy and interment will be arranged when it is again safe for friends and family to gather to celebrate “Madame” Lubӑne’s memory.
