Obituary of Ian “Scotty” Thomson
It is with broken hearts that the family of Ian Paterson Thomson announces his peaceful passing on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at his residence with his family by his side. Born in Ayrshire, Scotland on January 23, 1935, he was the son of the late John Thomson O.B.E. and Jesse (Rice) Thomson.
Ian moved to British Guiana at a young age. He later attended boarding school at Stansted College before attending Mount Allison University where he met the love of his life, Connie and married in 1962. He and Connie moved to Baie D’Urfé, Quebec to start their family. In 1982 the family moved to Rothesay. Ian started his own shipping company with his partner, Jane Madsen, named Maritime Canada Shipping Services in 1988.
Ian was a kind, supportive man of few words. He enjoyed gardening, sailing, and having coffee with friends. He was a natural born athlete, excelling at football, golf, curling and bowling and was very competitive.
He was a hard-working man who took care of his family. He looked forward to his annual trip to Florida with his Riverside golf friends.
He will be missed by his children: Sue of Rothesay, Cynthia “Pinte” Collins (Mark) of Quispamsis, John (Émmanuelle) of Saint John, and Jim (Leanne) of Ottawa; and grandchildren: Joey, Ben, Boyd, Killian, Aimée, Bailey, and Drew.
In addition to his parents and wife, Connie (Blanchet), he was predeceased by his aunt Mary and cousin Billy.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Alan Rombaut and Dr. Tom Whelan as well as the Extra Mural Team for their care and compassion.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424). Due to the current public health restrictions, Ian’s funeral service will be held at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
