Obituary for
Ian Glen Frederick Brown
Ian Glen Frederick Brown
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ian Glen Frederick Brown on May 2, 2020 at the Montfort Hospital, Ottawa, after contracting Covid-19.
Ian was born March 3, 1949 in Winchester, Ontario, the first born child, to Norma (Wylie) (predeceased) and Fred Brown (predeceased). Brother of Leona Brown, Forest Grove, B.C.; David Brown, Ottawa, Ontario; Heather Billings, Greely, Ontario and Danny Brown, Ottawa, Ontario (predeceased). Uncle of Randy Miller, Aldergrove, B.C.; Jodi Miller, Kelowna, B.C.; Matthew Billings, Greely, Ontario and Ryan Billings, Ottawa, Ontario. Great-uncle to Ysabel Billings, Ottawa, Ontario.
Ian spent most of his childhood in Winchester, Ontario, except for three years in Victoria, B.C. on a military posting with his family. Ian never married and lived most of his adult life in Ottawa with his mother and two brothers, living in the Glebe, Sandy Hill, Overbrook, Britannia and Hunt Club areas.
Ian struggled with school work, attending school for three years in Victoria, B.C. and then in Winchester and Ottawa, Ontario. After leaving school, he attended a day program with the March of Dimes for several years. In his early twenties, he was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. This made it difficult for him to get around, but he persevered. He worked at a daycare centre on Carling Avenue for approximately 10 years. Ian then went on to work at McDonalds in Ottawa South and South Keys for a total of 20 years.
In March of 2009 Ian fell at work and was unable to finish his shift. It was determined that he would now have to use a wheelchair for his mobility. He was forced to give up his job at McDonalds. He spent several months at the Rehabilitation Centre at the General Hospital, learning how to use a wheelchair and finally getting his own. Eventually, he went to live at Carlingview Manor Long Term Care Centre and then moved to Laurier Manor.
Ian was extremely independent while he was mobile. Although physically and intellectually challenged, he worked, shopped, cooked for himself and did his own laundry. He liked to keep busy and was always on the move. He liked to go places and see different things. He travelled all over the city, attending many celebrations, festivals and concerts. He was a proud Legion member of Branch #480 for 25 years. Some of his pastimes were playing cards (euchre) and going to bingos. He loved music, going to movies and was interested in current events. He travelled independently to B.C. on the west coast and to PEI on the east coast. He studied the geography of the places he visited, was interested in the history, how the people lived and what they did.
A small family graveside service was held at Maple Ridge Cemetery, followed by burial. Rev. Laurie McKnight officiated and did a rendition of Amazing Grace.
Donations to Muscular Dystrophy would be appreciated.
