Obituary
HELMUTH HENRY KROLL
Born October 26, 1936
Passed Away October 6, 2020 (20 days shy of his 84th birthday)
It is with the utmost sadness and sorrow that the family of Helmuth Kroll announces his passing on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 when he peacefully passed away as the new day awakened.
Helmuth was born in East Prussia on October 26, 1936 and spent his younger childhood on the family farm. His family then endured the loss of his father and their farm during the war and Helmuth grew up into his teenage years with his mom and two sisters. In his teens he loved playing soccer, he was a prized goalie, and his team travelled throughout Germany, Italy and Luxembourg for games.
At 18 years of age he decided to start a new chapter of his life. He courageously boarded a ship bound for Canada where he did not know a word of English. He eventually settled in Medicine Hat, Alberta and two years later he met the Love of his Life, Katharine, and they soon married and started their family with their son being born a year after marriage. Helmuth attended night school to learn English while he apprenticed in the masonry field where he very quickly became Foreman on many big work sites due to his incredible work ethic. He also was musical and was in a band where he played his tuba.
Soon after, he and his wife and son moved to Calgary where he had dreams of starting and owning his own company. They bought their first house, their daughter was born and a few years later he and his young family moved to a new part of the city and he started his company, Kustom Masonry. His dreams had come true.
For the next 35 years he worked very hard and enjoyed his life with his family. He was a member of The German Canadian Male Choir for 25 years, he was an avid curler for 20 years, he coached soccer and owned Standard Bred Racehorses … Smokey’s Pace was his pride and joy.
Helmuth worked very hard, he had to work in all kinds of weather and he would leave every morning with the most positive attitude. You could always hear him whistling, he was an amazing whistler. That was a true testament to the kind of man he was. He didn’t let things get him down, he was always happy, kind, loving, patient and encouraging.
Helmuth was a history and geography buff and he loved to travel. He and his wife travelled to Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Alaska, Hawaii and numerous trips to California and Nevada and he also loved Vancouver Island. He had a wonderful vacation in Cuba with his wife, daughter and son-in-law where he entertained everyone by asking for “Pina Poladas”. Helmuth loved the ocean, he loved seafood and fish and whenever he was in San Francisco he always had to have a bowl or five of their famous clam chowder.
In the year 2000 he and his wife moved to High River, Alberta. There he enjoyed more of a simpler life, going for lots of walks and enjoying visits from his grandchildren. He was very involved with his two granddaughters from the day they were born and they had a very special bond and you could always find them laughing and playing games together. The girls will miss their Opi very much.
Helmuth loved animals and Bear and Georgie will miss him. It gives us some comfort knowing that Benny, Fluffy and Sophie are with him now.
Helmuth leaves behind his loving wife of 60 years, Katharine (Kay), his daughter Karen and her husband Brian, and his twin granddaughters Madison and Samantha. He also leaves behind his son Robert (Dana), his grandson Travis and his sister Waldtraud who lives in Germany. Helmuth was predeceased by his loving father, mother and older sister Alma, his sisters-in-law Rose Frank and Anna Fisher and brothers-in-law Fred Fisher, Ron Shurvell, Gottlieb Roth and Walter Mueller. He will also be missed by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Adolf and Margaret Roth, Hilda Mueller, Helen and Karl Tessman, Norman and Sharon Frank, Violet Roth as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
We will miss him every single day until the day we can join him again.
In keeping with Helmuth’s wishes, no funeral will be held. A Celebration of Helmuth’s Life will be held at a later date in Medicine Hat.
