Helen Mary Campbell
1930-2020
Helen Mary (Stright) Campbell, age 89, passed
away during a beautiful morning sunrise on May 17, 2020, in Evergreen
Home for Special Care, Kentville. Helen was a kind and gentle soul who
usually had a ready smile, a kind word and frequently an amusing
witticism for anyone she crossed paths with. Born in
Summerside, PE, she grew up in Pictou, NS. She was the
daughter of the late James Leslie (of Stright and Mackay Shipbuilding
Ltd. Pictou) and Greta Maude (Walton) Stright. As a young adult Helen
worked as a stenographer for Ferguson Industries in Pictou and for
Scotian Gold in Kentville. Helen suffered and endured heroically
through many years of bipolar disorder. For 45 years she found
comfort, nurturing and purpose in an active membership in Al-Anon.
Perhaps for all of her struggles she was truly full of love and
compassion and tried to be a friend to all. Helen is survived by her
children, Greg, Wolfville; Shari, Courtenay, BC; Susan (Chris)
Baltzer, Coldbrook; and Tena (Kevin) Poirier, Bedford; grandchildren,
Taylor Baltzer and Danielle, Ashley and Luc Poirier; sister, Vivian
McPhee (formerly Swain), Greenwich, who was a constant and appreciated
support throughout the years for Helen and her family; treasured
companion Fred Kelly, also a valued support, Wolfville; several nieces
and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her brothers,
Herb, Truman and Ivan and her ex-husband William A. Campbell. A
special thank you to Evergreen Home for Special Care for the wonderful
care they provided the last couple of years and for providing her
children with the opportunity to be with her during her final moments.
Also, a particular thank you to Paul Wood who’s music ministrations
greatly stimulated and nurtured Helen in her time at Evergreen. Music
was such a significant comfort to her, and she was happiest when
dancing, singing or clapping and stomping. She also enjoyed many walks
in Evergreen’s beautiful garden with Fred where they would often feed
the squirrels, chipmunks and blue jays. She will be deeply missed but
her memory will be cherished for the rest of our days. In lieu of
flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Mental Health
Association – NS Kings County or the Kidney Foundation of Canada (NS)

funeral service, by request. Arrangements have been entrusted
to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville.
