It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, Helen Margaret Finney, age 87, on Sunday, January 12, 2020, at the Northside Community Guest Home, surrounded by her loving family.
Ma was born on December 26, 1932, in Bras d’Or. She was the daughter of the late Ellen Regis and Clifton Jessome.
She was a stay at home Mom for many years, and then entered the workforce at National Sea, where she worked until her retirement.
Ma’s greatest joys were being surrounded by her family, and family gatherings. Other passions of hers included dancing, bowling, and playing cards. She was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8 Ladies Auxiliary.
Ma is survived by daughters Rodgerena Finney, Sydney Mines, and Diana (Kenny Steele), North Sydney, sons Clifton, St. John’s, Nl, David (Elsie), New Glasgow, Richard (Karen), Bras d’Or, Dennis (Wendy), George’s River, Danny (Della), Corner Brook, Nl, Creston (Monique), Halifax, and Leon (Vivian), Bras d’Or, 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild Ella, and a new great-grandchild expected in 2020. Also left to mourn are her sister Eunice Hyde, Florence, brothers Dennis (Beanie) Jessome, and Lenny (Carol) Jessome, Ontario, sisters-in-law Lillian Finney and Connie Jessome, brother-in-law Harold Millington, along with many nieces and nephews. Ma also leaves behind many cherished friends whom she thought of as family.
Besides her parents, Ma was predeceased by her loving husband of 67 years, Dave, her sisters Theresa, Audrey and Yvonne, and her brother Jimmy.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Northside Guest Home and Dr. Michel McKeough for their care and kindness.
Visitation for Helen Finney will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A celebration of her life will take place on Thursday, at 11 am in Carman United Church, Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines, with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s memory may be made to the Cancer Patient Care Fund at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
