Hayward Francis Smith October 13, 1943 – October 23, 2020
It’s with profound sadness we announce the passing of our Captain “Hayward Francis Smith” October 23, 2020 at the Palliative Care Unit, L. A. Miller Centre, St. John’s, NL, with his Wife, Daughter and Son-in-law by his side. Dad fought a courageous 18 month battle with skin cancer. Predeceased by his parents Mary and Dena, step-father Fred, Brother Arch (March 2020), Brother-in-law Morgan, Sister-in-law Beulah, Sister Norma and Uncle Reg. Left to mourn with a lifetime of memories his wife Sylvia of 56 years. Sons, Paul (Diane) in ON, Mark (Vicki) in MB and daughter Kelly (Albert) in NL, 6 grandchildren and their partners, and 3 step-great grandchildren. Siblings, Maude, Ron (Elsie), Marie, Violet (Gerry), Florence (Joanne), Ida (Clayton) Laura, Eddie (Doug). Aunt Mary. In-laws, Lillian (Alf), Mavis (Bern), Nancy (Bill), Terri, Darlene (Bill), Stan (Sandy) George (Sam), Darren (Marlene), Adrian (Donna). Special friends John and Mary Thorne, his fishing buddy Harold Piercey and special friends in Manitoba, plus a large number of nieces and nephews whom he loved. Dad was a friend to all and loved the community he lived in. After joining the Canadian Army Service Corps and serving in the Congo Dad met his bride in Toronto and they ended up back in Newfoundland where he worked in the Long Harbour Plant until his retirement. He served on the Lions Club, Town Council, Fire Dept, Cadet Corp and Harbour Authority. He was on the board of the NL Trappers Assoc for many years and part of the Peacekeepers Association. As an avid outdoors man he spent his retirement doing what he loved. Cutting wood alongside his brothers, salmon fishing, trapping, cod fishing, trouting, moose hunting with his Son and most of all, boating with his daughter and son-in-law. He also loved to drive across Canada with Mom to visit his family especially his Son in Manitoba. Dads love for the Long Cove Harbour and Trinity Bay was immense. He spent many days taking family, friends and even strangers out on the water, and took every opportunity he had to tell people about the beautiful harbour we have. He believed in the Province, his community and was proud of where he came from.
