With sadness we announce the death of Hans Joergen Paulsen, June 27, 2020 at Southwood Hospice, beloved husband of 54 years of Marguerite Paulsen.
Hans was born December 8, 1926 in Rødekro Denmark and raised in Aalborg. He earned his civil engineering degree at Teknisk Universitet. Following military service Hans began his career as a civil engineer. He and a friend, Ole Gunvald, emigrated to Canada in 1953, settling in Calgary, Alberta. Throughout his career in the oil and gas industry Hans worked primarily in Northern Alberta, the Arctic, and Pakistan until his retirement. He served as president of the Danish Businessmen’s Association and held long-standing memberships in The Danish Canadian Club and The Glencoe Club. Hans was a skilled doubles badminton player, enjoying tennis in later years. A favorite chosen mission of his was to instill proper table tennis form to opponents and descendants.
Hans and Marguerite enjoyed extensive international travel, frequently observing wildlife. Family trips to Denmark were always a great source of pleasure. The daily crossword, bridge games, and all manner of puzzles kept Hans well occupied through the years. He was a lover of music especially enjoying an evening at the opera. Hans, as genial host, enjoyed favoring friends and family with food and drink all served with special attention to decorum, culminating in long evenings of conversation and laughter.
Hans had friends of long standing who he missed greatly, Hugo Renden, David Folinsbee and Stuart Barnard. A special place in his heart was reserved for farmer, and brother-in-law, Allan deValois. Hans is survived by Marguerite, daughters Andrea (Jamie Paterson), Ingrid Paulsen, and Ellen Paulsen (Dustin Levay); grandchildren Julia Paterson, Clark Paterson, and Madelyn Levay; sister Inga Haugland of Denmark and sister-in-law Aimee deValois of Barons, Alberta. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins in Canada, Denmark, and California. Predeceased by parents Soren and Ellen Paulsen, sister Cilla Gyde-Thomsen, brothers-in-law Georg Gyde-Thomson, Sigurd Haugland, and Bill Thompson; mother-in-law Ingetta deValois, and sister-in-law Lorna deValois.

  1. Roy remembers the time he flew Hans to Pincher Creek for a meeting. We both remember Hans as our caring host (making sure our glasses were never empty) and enjoying the tasty meals Marguerite prepared, which we shared at their home.
Hans was delightful to talk with – an excellent sense of humour which kept us on our toes.
    Love and Blessings.
