Haapamäki Pertti Olavi

Haapamäki Pertti Olavi May 4

1934 – 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pertti Olavi Haapamäki, on Monday, May 4, after a short illness. Born in Finland on April 9, 1934, he immigrated to Montreal (Beaconsfield) in 1970. Devoted husband of Inge (nee Busch) for 57 years, beloved father to Turjo and Susanne (Stephen Solyom), and cherished pappa to Adrian (Laura), Isabel and Carter/Alecia. Brother to Ritva, Marjatta, and Kari; predeceased by Seppo.
A long career as a Professional Engineer took Pertti to many sites around the world, working mainly for Rauma-Repola and Sunds (now Valmet). Pertti opened the North American office for Repola and his expertise was sought after by many; he continued to work on innovative designs in the pulp and paper industry, registering a number of chemical process patents. Pertti was always selfless, hardworking, dedicated and would not rest until a problem was solved. He was proud of his Finnish heritage, and was awarded a Knighthood, First Class, in the Order of the Lion of Finland in 1990.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, when family and friends will be able to come together to celebrate his life. Internment will also take place at a subsequent date in Haapamäki, Finland.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Welcome Hall Mission (606 Rue de Courcelle, Montréal, QC H4C 3L5, welcomehallmission.com) will be greatly appreciated.
