Gudrun (Goldie) (Gramma) daughter to Neils and Jensina (nee Jensen) Nielsen was born in Kongerslev, Denmark, October 10, 1921. In 1937, at the age of 16, while working on a farm as a milkmaid, she met the love of her life, Niels Jensen. They were married in 1942. Living in Stovring, Denmark they welcomed 3 children: Margit, Lis and Mogens.
The family moved to Canada in 1957…first to Revelstoke…and eventually to Edmonton where Gudrun worked at the Harry Ainlay Secondary School for many years. The family built a cabin at Mann Lake, Alberta, where they shared many happy times. In 1977, Gudrun and Neils moved to Whitehorse where they built a home on the Hotsprings Road, close to their daughter Dr. Lis Densmore. Gudrun worked at the Game Farm caring for animals and raising quail for the hawks to eat. She lived independently in Closeleigh Manor until her move to Whistle Bend Place in November 2018.
Gramma loved to work … growing an abundant garden, cooking and baking traditional (difficult to pronounce) Danish food. She loved to smile and laugh…enjoying thick black coffee, Danish cheese, and fresh tomatoes and liver paste on rye bread. She loved her friends … bingo, tai chi, yoga with ginger tea, and Tim Hortons. She loved being outside…walking, snowshoeing (into her late 80s), playing with the dogs and fishing. She loved her family…which to her included so many more than her relatives.
Sadly, Gudrun was predeceased by her husband Niels in November 1994, and her children: Margit (Andersen) October 2015, Mogens (June 2016) and Lis (Densmore) Jan 2018. She is survived by her younger sister Sigrid Hansen, ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
A Heartfelt Thank you to all the staff at Whistle Bend Place who have cared for “Gramma” “Goldie” “Gudrun” with loving kindness during her stay.
There will be a Celebration of Gudrun’s Life on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 2:00 pm Whistle Bend Place.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Gudrun Nielsina Jensen October 10 1921 December 19 2019..
