Obituary of Gertrude Jesse Jones (Green)
May 14, 1917 – November 18, 2020
On Wednesday afternoon, November 18, 2020 one of Cranbrook’s eldest and finest residents peacefully went to sleep, with her daughter Gail at her side.
Gertrude Jesse Jones (nee Young), born on May 14, 1917 to Jesse and Florence Young, was the last of a family of 10 children. She grew up in Khedive, Sask a small farming town. In July of 1937 she married Michael Green and they eventually settled in Regina, Sask. Gertrude worked for the Salvation Army Department store selling shoes. If you did not reach your daily tally you did not have a job the next day. Of course, mom was always at the top of the selling list! In 1947 mom and dad ventured west to the small town of Cranbrook, B.C., with dear friends George and Edith Klassen. They all partnered in purchasing a dilapidated Bake Shop located where the Access Centre is currently located. None of them were professional bakers, but Edith did know her way around the kitchen. They dug in their heels, worked hard, and had a remarkably successful business. Eventually mom and dad went on their own and opened Sunrise Grocery, then changing to Sunrise Marina. Mom was a great listener, a compassionate lady, never judging and ready to help at a moments notice. Mom worked along side Mike for many years and then Gail at the Hair Salon. She loved people and she loved to talk. If mom sat down beside a stranger, she would know their life story within moments. She was that easy to talk to.
In 1989 she lost Mike. In 1991 she married George Jones “Casey.” After 10 happy years Casey also passed away. The last 4 years of mom’s life, she resided at the F.W Green Home. The exceptional care given by the wonderful staff, recreation and management, and Dr. Dugay, especially during this last difficult year was deeply appreciated.
Left with wonderful memories and sadness right now, daughter Gail Goetz, pride of her life grandson Jeramie (Tami), 2 beautiful grandchildren Beckem and Madison, many nieces, and nephews.
“Your free Mom, you will be forever in my heart.”
Due to Covid, a Celebration of Life will be held when safe to do so.
A limb has fallen from the family tree.
I hear a voice saying, “Do Not grieve for me”.
Remember the best times, the laughter, the song.
The good life I lived while I was strong.
Continue my heritage, I’m counting on you.
Keep smiling and the sun will soon shine through.
My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest; remembering you all and how I truly was blessed.
Continue traditions, no matter how small.
Go on with your life, don’t worry about a fall.
I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chins, Until the day when we all are together again.
Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Services.
