Obituary for
Gerhard H. Plischke
On June 1, 2020, Gerhard Plischke, of Mayerthorpe, AB, passed away peacefully at home after a short illness at the age of 85 years.
He is loved and remembered by his wife of 53 years, Margaret; daughters, Helen, Jennifer (Doug), and Sandra (Bill); and son, Richard (Carin). Also missed by his grandchildren, Lauren, Cole, Nathalie, Owen, and Parker; one sister, Ruth (Jack), and three nieces.
Gerhard was born on a homestead south of Mayerthorpe in 1935. Quiet and sensitive, Gerhard loved to laugh and spent many hours engaged with friends, neighbours, and his family, whether it was playing cards, attending auction sales, enjoying music, or just lending a hand to neighbours. Although teased by his family for an obstinate streak, Gerhard believed in respect, fairness, and getting along with everybody. He quit school early yet became a prolific reader and a keen follower of politics and current events. Despite a reserved nature, he engaged family members in many a heartfelt conversation. He was a nature-lover and conservationist and farmed according to those values. A life-long birder, in his later years he spent many hours watching, feeding, and housing birds, and bees, on his porch.
The family would like to thank the Mayerthorpe Home Care staff, the many excellent nurses who cared for Gerhard during recent years, and the Family Practice doctors for their kindness and care, in particular Dr. Jamal.
At Gerhard’s wish, there will be no funeral. A private Celebration of his Life will be held later at the farm. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to the Mayerthorpe Hospital Auxiliary Association, Box 582, Mayerthorpe, AB T0E 1N0.
