Gerald’s Obituary
MELANSON, Gerald Benoit – It is with profound sadness that we the family of Gerald Melanson of Arcadia, Yarmouth Co. (formerly of Eel Brook), announces his peaceful passing at the age of 91 on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born May 31, 1929 in Springhaven, he was a son of the late Fred and Hélène (Muise) Melanson. Gerald worked as a scallop fisherman for Comeau’s Seafood for most of his adult life, however in his younger years, and having an adventurous spirit, he travelled to Hamilton, Ont. and Montreal for work, as well as in Canada’s North, where he worked on the DEW Line. He was a great story teller, loved farming and gardening and working with his hands, and many people will remember him for crafting wooden spoons and axe handles. But above all else, Gerald loved his family, who will all miss him dearly. His love for infants and children always brought him great happiness. His heart would fill with joy whenever he was able to hold a baby or child. His love of hide-and-seek was well known to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, among others. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Lillian (Muise) Melanson, as well as by their children, Fred (Albertine) Melanson, Cape Breton; Mike (Melony) Melanson, New Ross; Cindy (Tom) Doucette, Arcadia; Bev Melanson, Halifax; Dean Melanson, Antigonish and Daren Melanson, Halifax, as well as by 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Aside from his parents, Gerald was predeceased by a son in infancy, as well as by brothers and sisters, Lawrence Melanson, Elizabeth Melanson; Lena Deveau, Rosalie Doucette, Alma Surette, Isabelle Vacon, Vince Melanson, Louis Meanson and Emilienne Bourque, and a brother in infancy. Visitation will take place from 6-8 p.m. Monday, with prayers at 7 p.m. at H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Yarmouth. All visitors are asked to please use only the parking lot entrance. Please bear in mind that only 50 people can be in the building at one time and social distancing guidelines must be followed; as such, you may be required to wait outside for some time. A private funeral Mass with only family in attendance will take place on Tuesday at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Ste-Anne du Ruisseau with interment to follow in the parish cemetery. It has been requested that there be family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Tri-County Site of the VON or to St. Anne’s Church Building Fund.
