Geoff’s Obituary
Geoff Exner, long time resident of Grimshaw, Alberta area, passed away, unexpectedly on March 16, 2020 at 78 years of age.
Geoff was born on February 28, 1942 in the ton of Notikewin, Alberta and grew up on his family’s farm in the Dixonville area. in his early adult life, Geoff left home and pursued work on the oil rigs. He also spent some time operating heavy equipment building highways. During this time, he met his (former) wife and together they shared four children before moving to Saskatchewan. Geoff was a devoted father and worked hard his entire life to be a good provider for his family and always made time for his children whom he loved unconditionally. For many years, he spent a lot of time travelling back and forth between Alberta and Saskatchewan to be with them. Geoff instilled in his children his love for fishing and camping, being outdoors and appreciating the simple things life had to offer. His children have since passed this love to their children, his grandchildren.
Geoff was also a successful trapper for many years, and he dedicated a lot of his time to that lifestyle. He took pride in the cabin he built on his own, and all of the gardens and landscaping he created that surrounded it. He was always working in his yard and adding new features. This was a lot of work but he enjoyed what it would bring him, and he appropriately named this his “Place of Peace”.
Geoff was also an avid gardener. When planting his annual vegetable garden he would purposely plant more than he needed for himself solely for the purpose of sharing with others who may appreciate it. He loved berry Picking and canning and baking as well. When he had the opportunity and found just the right berry patch he would pick for hours and then use those berries to make pies, jams, and syrups that he would graciously gift to others. He rarely did anything for himself.
Geoff will always be remembered for his kind heart and thoughtfulness, generosity and good nature. He had a good sense of humour and was quite witty in his way, always coming up with quirky catch phrases on a whim.
Geoff is predeceased by his parents, Elsie and Joe Exner; his daughter Darrelle Gayle Exner; and a brother, Marvin Exner. He is survived by three children; Danette Exner (Kevin), Dwight Exner (Joy), Davina Coe (Mel); and eight grandchildren, Nathan, Samantha, Zakery, Lacie, Ayden, Emery, Sadie and William.
….. Think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched
for nothing LOVED is ever lost,
and he was LOVED so much…..
A small memorial will be held and an opportunity for friends and family to have coffee with and share memories of Geoff. This will be a come and go event on Saturday July 18 from 1-3pm at the Grimshaw Legion Hall.
