Gary Joseph Naugle
March 23, 1945 – August 15, 2020
Gary Joseph Naugle
Age 75 years, of Dartmouth. Born in Halifax March 23, 1945 to Lyle and Annie Naugle (Eddie). Passed away Saturday, August 15, 2020 in Dartmouth General Hospital from the effects of lung cancer. He was born and raised in Eastern Passage and was fiercely proud of his roots. Tough until the end, he hung on as long as he could with an iron will and never complained more than to just say “well this is a goddamn waste of time”. He lived a life of work and adventure, although he wouldn’t ever have seen it that way. From sailing into the Artic to working on the nuclear power plant at Point Lepreau. He excelled in his many chosen careers starting when he joined the Canadian Coast Guard as a boy of 17 in 1962 and was an original member of that newly formed service branch of the Canadian Goverment. He was engineering crew on CCGS The Labrador, The John A. MacDonald and was original crew, “plank owner” on The Louis S. St. Laurent. He was also the holder of a class one commercial drivers license in his younger days and held a red seal journeymans certification as a pipefitter. He worked many years as an Engine Fitter at the Dartmouth Marine Slips and was a proud member of Local 56 Plumbers and Pipefitters, working union jobs all across the Maritimes and running crews with an unblemished safety record. He was a master in the mechanical trades with an artists touch. He was an avid outdoorsman in his younger years hunting and fishing all over Nova Scotia. He often described himself when he was paying others the highest compliment you could give a man in his opinion, “he would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it”; he was generous to a fault. He was always sociable and enjoyed nothing more than to enjoy a drink or few with his friends either at the kitchen table or at the Legion or the Buffalo Club. He was predeceased by his parents and his sisters, Lyla Naugle and Judith Langille. He is survived by brothers, Edwin (Mary), Dartmouth; Eric (Lynn), Porters Lake; Johnny, Cow Bay; sisters, Carol Carroll, Dartmouth; Edie Popular (Jake), Eastern Passage; Joan Sullivan, Cardigan, P.E.I. and Patsy Guymere, Halifax; sons, Richard, East Lawrencetown; James, Sunshine Coast, B.C., and grandsons, Lyle and Wyatt, East Lawrencetown; granddaughter, Shayla, Dartmouth. Special thanks to his good friends, David Giles, Kevin Ryan and an extra special thanks to Troy Popke. Also thanks to the Brothers and Sisters of the Buffalo Club Harbour Lodge No. 53 for their memorial service and hospitality. Cremation has taken place and he will be laid to rest with his parents and sister in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Eastern Passage. Donations in memory can be made to Buffalo Harbour Lodge No. 53 or Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 31 Dartmouth.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Gary Joseph Naugle March 23 1945 August 15 2020..
