Memorial Donation
Francis “Mickey” Martel, born July 13th, 1937, departed this life on March 3rd in Rockdale, Cape Breton.
Though our hearts are filled with sorrow, there is tremendous gratitude for his presence in our lives.
Mickey spent his years as a young adult employed in the forestry industry in addition to raising his family. It was during these years that he built the family home he resided in for most of his life and was privileged to remain in until his final days.
In his later years he was able to do what he had always wanted, becoming a fisherman and vessel Captain. It was his love for the profession that drove him to continue fishing until he was no longer able to do so.
Mickey was especially fond of the outdoors, spending many hours walking or driving with his loyal canine companion Sadie. He was always happy to share the observations he made with anyone who may accompany him on these outings. His words always reflecting his genuine love and pride for his home, Cape Breton Island.
He also loved to explore the wilderness through hunting, and anxiously awaited the beginning of each season.
Mickey is survived by his children: Sheila (Steve), Michael and Sharon (Stephen); grandchildren: Michele, Patrick and Lise; and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Valerie, Blanche and Quinten “Kenny”; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mickey was predeceased by his father Charles Martel; mother Annie Mae (Mombourquette); and siblings: Rita, Gerard, John and Jane. He was also predeceased by his former wife Lillian Martel.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to all health care professionals that enabled Mickey to remain in comfort at home while receiving the utmost care. In particular, Family Physician Dr. Pluta, Oncologist Dr. Saliba, in home Palliative Care Physician Dr. Cooper, and all the additional in-home Palliative Care support team.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Greens Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia. Visitation will take place Friday, March 6th from 6-9 p.m. at Holy Guardian Angels resting place. Just saw this while browsing the news about NS and the virus. Will always have happy memories about Cape Breton and all the warm and wonderful people I spent time with there. Love to all of Mickey’s family members.
