Frances McEwan – Age 73, Port
Hood A Quiet Life Well
Lived
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our
beautiful Mom, Frances McEwan, 73, of Port Hood. She left
this world peacefully on the afternoon of Wednesday, April
8th 2020, at home surrounded by the
love and warmth of her daughters.
Born in Glace Bay,on January 1st, 1947, she was a
daughter of the late Bernie and Jane (Nicholson) McDougall.
Always up for an adventure, her love of travel began at a young age
when she left Glace Bay and headed to Boston where she worked
as a nanny. Although she loved the “Boston
States”, she eventually returned to her Cape Breton roots where
she began her family. Mom dedicated herself to home life and
raising her girls before deciding to further her education. She
attended Canso Regional Vocational School where she earned a diploma
in accounting. Her travels started again working as a secretary for a
number of local schools, making friends wherever she went, until she
found a home at the Strait Area Education Recreation Center in Port
Hawkesbury. She spent many happy years there – she truly enjoyed her
work and forged lifelong friendships.
After her retirement Mom was able to do all the things she
loved. Her passion for travel was keen no matter where the
destination. Whether it was Halifax, Tatamagouche, Alberta or the US,
she loved it all and never stopped for long. She found a kindred
spirit in her beloved companion, Herbie and her adventures took on a
whole new life. They spent many days exploring the beaches in Florida,
seeking out the best places to eat ice cream and enjoying as much live
music as they could. Florida was their happy place. Mom
loved music and was always ready for a dance.
Mom spent every minute she could with her family. Her
daughters, grandchildren and her first great-granddaughter were the
absolute centre of her world. She quite simply adored us,
savouring and celebrating each of our accomplishments. Our
highs were her highs and our lows were her lows. With a gentle soul,
she was always there to support us, no matter what the
situation. She was not only an amazing force in our lives –
she touched so many others along the way. Her friends loved
her and she treasured every lunch, phone call and conversation with
each person in her life.
Sometimes a woman of few words, we could tell what she was
thinking from one of her famous “looks”. No
mistake about it, she definitely had an opinion. She was a
wise woman and she never stopped trying to learn more. She
had wonderful appetite for reading and
history.
In sharing our lives with mom we laughed, we cried and
celebrated life’s beautiful moments. We will long for an
opportunity to meet again with our beloved Momma, aunt, sister,
partner and friend. Her laugh, her hugs and her smiles will
be forever missed. Her love is her legacy which lives
on.
Frances was predeceased by her parents, Michael Bernard and
Janet “Jane” Irene McDougall, brothers, John, Edward and
Gerald, sisters, Irene and Bernice and other siblings in
infancy.
She is survived by her loved companion, Herbert Kampe; her
first love and father of her children, Nelson McEwan; daughters, Karen
