M. Frances Johnston
1921-2020
Johnston, M. Frances
In celebration of a life well lived, the family of Frances
(Kilfoil) Johnston announces her peaceful passing on March 14, 2020 at
Rocmaura Nursing Home, Saint John, NB. Born on October 20, 1921 in
Johnville, NB, she was the daughter of the late Vincent and Mary
Catherine (Crain) Kilfoil.
She will be remembered for being a tireless volunteer at many
events, including the CWL, St. Vincent de Paul Society and Epsilon
Y’s Menettes’ Club. Frances will be remembered for
being an exceptionally hard worker, with her knitting, sewing,
quilting, and baking – hence the nickname “Gramma
Cookie”. She welcomed and entertained, any and all
company, and could prepare a delicious meal at a moment’s
notice. Her interest in all ages, and her listening ear to
many, was reflected in her multitude of visits, calls and letters from
near and far.
Frances is survived by her only sister, Margaret McHarg; two
sister-in-laws, Anna Kilfoil and Peggy Kilfoil; her four children,
Patricia Mabey, Dan Johnston (Rosemary), Joe Johnston (Joan) and Rob
Johnston (Tracey); eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren;
multiple nieces and nephews; as well as her dear friend, Marg
Gorman.
She will now be reunited with her husband of 57 years,
Clarence J. Johnston; daughter, Marie Johnston, who died in 2019; as
well as her five brothers, Bill, Gerald, Raymond, Harold and Murray
Kilfoil.
Frances was a beautiful person, that led a beautiful life,
always content and felt blessed. She loved her friends,
family and faith unconditionally. In her words, she never
expected to live “this” long. One of her many
quotes that we will recall fondly, is her genuine thank you for every
item, especially a bag of potatoes, “this will do me out”,
said with a smile.
At this time, due to the current health recommendations
pertaining to large gatherings, the funeral mass will be for family
members only. A celebration of Frances’ life and
reception will be held at a later date in the spring. For those who
wish, memorial donations may be made to the Martin Kilfoil Memorial
Fund, The Newburg Cemetery Fund or a charity of the donor’s
choice.

I knew your Mom from our many trips to NB to Newburg Day and vacationing we would meet up with your Dad and Frances . Clarence is our second cousin(Montague side ) and your Grandma Mabel was my Mom’s Godmother . Your Mom and Dad always seemed so happy in their camper and always told great stories. She was just a loving genuine person with a great personality and warmth. I use to talk maybe yearly to catch up on Down east news after your Dad passed . She must have given your Dad a great support and patience through all his book research. Now reunited in heaven. It is special that her Mass will be held at St. Josephs, Newburg My sympathy to you all because she was a treasure for sure .
