Obituary of Elmer Frank Bursey
It is with much sorrow, the family of the late Elmer F. Bursey announce his sudden passing at his home in Botwood on April 14, 2020, at the age of 90.
He was born in Twillingate on November 23, 1929. He moved St. John’s at a very young age with his parents, where they lived until he 11 years old, and then moved to Botwood, where he lived his entire life.
He is predeceased by his parents, Pastors Frank and Hazel Bursey, parents-in-law Gilbert and Minnie Evans, sister-in-law Clarice Brent, brothers-in-law Bruce Brent and James Jardine.
He leaves to mourn with loving memories his wife of 64 years, Ina Jean (Evans), his son Peter and his daughters Helen and Donna (Geoff Osborne), his much loved grandchildren Jonathan Butt, Michael Hancock (Jennifer), Nicholas Butt, Timothy Hancock (Kady), Miranda Bursey (Travis) Kristin Bursey (Gabriel) and 3 great grandchildren, Spencer, Grace and Sophia. He also leaves to mourn his brothers Arnold (Joan), David (Fern) his only sister Ada Slade (Hubert), his sisters-in-law Marion Jardine and Margaret Ivany (Roy), someone very special to him, Trudy Collins and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.
He retired from Abitibi-Price (formerly known as the A.N.D. Co.) in December 1990 and enjoyed a very lengthy retirement. He was a volunteer with many organizations throughout his lifetime; the Botwood Lions Club, the Botwood Masonic Lodge, various political associations, but his most loved of all was his 25 years of dedicated service to the town he loved, where he held various titles as Councillor, Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the Town of Botwood.
He gave his life to the Lord on February 15, 2009, and from that time until his passing, he enjoyed belonging to the congregation of Jubilee Pentecostal Temple, and his years of attending bible study with his Christian family at the Salvation Army Church.
He loved working outdoors, especially planting trees, gardening and grooming his family’s trees and shrubs. For many years he enjoyed travelling, snowmobiling with his wife and wonderful friends, and enjoyed the time they all spent together at the cabin in New Bay. He dabbled in woodworking in his shed, had a hand in farming over the years, and after his retirement he became an avid, beautiful painter. His talents and hobbies were unlimited.
Our sadness is profound, but we thank God for his precious life. He will be greatly missed, always loved, and forever in our hearts.
Due to COVID-19 there will be no visitation or funeral service at this time. A private burial will take place at the Pentecostal Cemetery, Botwood.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to a charity of choice.
