Elma Mary Rutherford Dickie April 20 2020

Dickie (Rutherford), Elma Mary – age 94, passed away peacefully in Debert Court on April 20, 2020. She was a daughter of Willis and Della (Matheson) Rutherford and was born and raised in Newton Mills.
As a young woman, she attended Success Business College in Truro and worked for some time in Toronto. Following her marriage to Neil Dickie, she spent her married life in Eastville. She resumed her education at South Colchester High School as an adult student and continued on to attain her teaching certification at Nova Scotia Teachers College. She taught in the Middle Stewiacke Elementary School until retirement. Elma was an active member of Springside United Church, and when she moved to Bible Hill following Neil’s death she joined St. David’s United Church and was a member of the UCW in both congregations. She enjoyed time spent volunteering with the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society & Museum.
She is survived by her sisters, Marg Rhodes, California and Laura (Jim) Shea, Dartmouth; daughter, Karen (Steve) Miller, Middle Musquodoboit; grandsons Craig (Danielle), Oxford; Sheldon (Deanna), Cole Harbour; great-grandchildren Sara, Addison and Sam; as well as several nieces, nephews and their families. Besides her parents and husband, Elma was predeceased by her brother, Robert Rutherford, Newton Mills; sister, Lillian MacKenzie, Westville; brothers-in-law, John MacKenzie and Bill Rhodes; special friend, Walter Perrin; nephew, Lorne Dickie; niece, Hazel Dickie and all of Neil’s siblings and their spouses.
A big thank you to the staff of Debert Court and Today’s Nurse for their care and kindness to Elma during these difficult times.
Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit and a graveside service in Eastville Cemetery will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Eastville Cemetery, Stewiacke Valley Historical Society/Museum or any charity.
