Elizabeth (Betty) Kennedy, a resident of Nova Scotia, formerly of Dawson Creek, B.C. passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 12, 2020 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, NS, at the age of 75 years. Elizabeth was born on April 10, 1944. She was the fifth of ten children to the late Gerald and Verna (Dean) Cox of Dean Settlement, NS. Elizabeth graduated from high school of commerce in Springfield, Mass. In 1963, she met the love of her life, John Kennedy and they married on November 2, 1963. First, a son, Steven, was born in Picton, Ontario, where John served with the First Canadian Guards. They moved to Nova Scotia in the fall of 1966 when John was released from the Army. David and Kari were born in Truro, NS where they lived for ten years. After that, they moved to BC in October 1976. John worked in the logging industry, working for Canadian Forest Products in 1978 until he was disabled in 1998. Betty worked at many different jobs, from Bata Shoe Factory, Karastan Carpet Mills, cleaning houses, church janitor, cashier, consultant for a cosmetic company, driving pilot car for long loads… she also babysat children for a few years in Dawson Creek Alliance Church so moms could attend Bible Study. She wanted to be more “kid friendly” so asked if it was okay for the children to call her Granma Betty instead of Mrs. Kennedy. One little girl that she remembers called her “Apple Betty.” That would be Natalia and of course her little brother, Clayton, followed suite. She enjoyed her time with the children, even having the ordeal of removing a thumb-tac from David Eldleman’s little foot and applying a Band-Aid. She missed her Nova Scotia roots and family there and moved back home in May of 2012. Betty felt that her greatest accomplishment was raising her three children to be responsible adults, contributing to society in their respective communities, to know Jesus and be kind and loving towards others. Her favourite scriptures were Jeremiah 29: 11-14b and Romans 8: 28-32. Elizabeth is survived by her sisters, Irene (Warren) Brown and Deanna (John) Lavertue; brother, Dale (Kim) Cox; son, Steven (Gail) Kennedy; daughter, Kari (Darren) Erickson; daughter-in-law, Cristi Kennedy; grandchildren, Tyler (Ceilidh), Katelyn (Jason), Marshall and Gavin, Courtney (Michael), Jay, Dylan and Shelby. Besides her parents, Elizabeth was predeceased by sisters, Margaret and Rita; brothers, Gerald Jr, Bernard, Dennis and John, all loved and missed, but not more loved and missed than her beloved son, David, who died in a logging accident on December 7, 2014. Elizabeth will be dearly missed by her great grandchildren, church family, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, September 25th at 11am in Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke with pastor Scott Penner officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
