It is with deep sorrow and broken hearts that we, the family announce the passing of Edith Elizabeth (Butler) Lewis in the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Saturday, April 25, 2020, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Clarkes Beach – Conception Bay, NFLD, on May 14, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Ruby (Bishop) Butler.
Anyone that knew our Mom was touched by how kind and compassionate that she truly was. She never had a bad word to say about anyone. She loved her children with every ounce of her being. Mom was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish where she was married on June 6, 1953. She retired in 2001 as a CR5 at Citizenship and Immigration – a job that she truly loved and often talked about. She was an avid Bingo player and loved getting together with her bingo buddies, especially Mary. She also enjoyed spending our inheritance at the Casino (lol). Mom is survived by her loving son, John (Nancy), Peterborough, Ont.; daughters Diane (Randy) MacDonald, Sydney River, Valerie Cooke (Darryl), Middle River, Margie (David) Gillis, Whitney Pier, and Debbie (Eric) Christmas, Hammonds Plains; son-in-law Nick Pallotta, Thornhill, Ont.; brother Wilfred (Judy) Butler, Sydney; brothers-in-law, Earle, Sandy (Chook) and Leo (Marie), sisters-in-law, Rena Carew and Denise Lewis; nine grandchildren, Ian (Amanda) Lewis, Robert MacDonald (Guinevere), Danny (Laura) MacDonald, Amanda (James) Walker, Jennifer (Pallotta) Delpero, Patrick Gillis (Tera), John David Gillis (Vanessa), Cameron MacDonald, and Logan Christmas; five great-grandchildren, Madison, Julia, Tony, Connor, and Isaac; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by her loving husband of 65 years, Donnie who lovingly referred to her as “the cook”, daughter Ruby (Lewis) Pallotta; son-in-law, Bill Cooke; sisters Florence McInnis, and Elsie Mae (in infancy); brothers-in-law, Robert McInnis, Arthur, Charles and Thomas Lewis, Robert Holland, Bernie Carew, and John Jackson; sisters-in-law, Ethel Holland, Anna Mae Jackson, Janet Lewis, Gaye Lewis and Teresa Lewis.
We would like to sincerely thank Doctors, nurses and staff of 3B and An Cala Palliative Care Units at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the compassionate and loving care provided to Mom.
Visitation and funeral service will take place in Sydney Memorial Chapel at a later date when permitted. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery following the funeral .
