Obituary
O’DONNELL, Dr. Maurice
April 8, 1928 – July 28, 2020
The family of Maurice O’Donnell is deeply saddened by his passing at Samaritan Place in Saskatoon. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Barbara (October 2016). He is survived by his children Michael, Mary, Bernie, Gerry and their families, who adored their Papa. Maurice was born in Lanigan, SK to Eleanor and David O’Donnell and was the youngest brother to Alice and Kevin. Maurice and Barbara graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1948, then settled in Toronto to further his education where he became a Doctor of Optometry in 1952. Maurice and Barbara were married in September of 1951 after her graduation as a social worker. They then began their journey as a family. They moved back to Regina, then Kindersley for 27 years which allowed Maurice and his family many opportunities. Professional life, community service and having challenges were all very important to him. He achieved so much. Optometric practices, real estate holdings, volunteering with Knights of Columbus, SAMR, SARM, MS Society, civic and provincial politics, numerous boards, committees and causes were all handled with his usual grace, skill and charm. Maurice was always up for a challenge. He speed skated, skied, bike toured, golfed, swam, camped and was a licensed pilot who loved his 2 airplanes. He could fix or repair most everything and his homes reflected his handyman and design ideas. Travel was a passion with many exotic locales visited, as well as the home in Arizona where he could golf and go on long bike rides. Maurice’s caring for Barbara in her last years of life was loving, selfless and an inspiration to all his family. Maurice will be remembered as the pillar of the family, a professional who cared for his patients, community and those in need. He led by example and it is a privilege to have had him in our lives as an honourable role model. The family expresses their appreciation for the staff and residents of Samaritan Place where Maurice lived this last year. The care and comfort given meant so much to Maurice and his family. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest a donation in Maurice’s name to Samaritan Place (375 Cornish Rd., Saskatoon, SK S7T 0P3). Due to Covid-19, a Private Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church in Saskatoon. The Rite of Committal will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery – Catholic Section.
