Tributes
Warren, Dr. F. S. [Bill]
Born October 26, 1920 in Winnipeg, died May 6, 2020 Ottawa
Survived by his wife of 77 years Mary (Caldwell) Warren, his children Patricia (Dave), Kathy (Jim), Susan (Greg), Margaret (Richard), and John; his grandchildren Eric, Grant, Ian, Emily and Maria and his great grandchildren Zofya, Taymore, Malcolm, Francis, Gordon and Eowyn. Predeceased by his son Ross.
The family moved constantly in the 20’s and 30’s and Bill certainly earned the title of the memoir he wrote for his children – Born to Travel.
Bill attended OAC in Guelph followed by the University of Minnesota for his MSc and PhD. The second World War interrupted his studies and his marriage. He served from 1942 to 1945 as a navigator with the RCAF. A long career with the Department of Agriculture began and ended in Ottawa and included a stint in Nappan, Nova Scotia. Not content to retire Bill and Mary joined CESO to help wheat growing efforts in Sri Lanka and Tanzania with shorter postings to China, Thailand and Russia. Before, during and after traveling, Bill enjoyed many summers at the cottage with children and grandchildren.
Always a picture of health Bill was sadly stricken with Alzheimers in later years. The family is greatful for the compassionate care provided by the staff of the Perley Veterans Hospital which allowed Bill to live his last years with dignity.
