Obituary
Douglas Grierson Baird, age 73 of Port Perry on February 2, 2020, after a long illness went to be with his Lord.
Douggie was born in Peterborough, Ontario – the son of John Veitch Baird and Lilias Baird (nee Grierson) on December 20, 1946. Douggie and his twin brother Robert spent their childhood with their many friends in Peterborough and their summers on the shores of Sandy Lake. Following high school, Douggie moved to Toronto where he had a successful career as a stock broker – the highlight of those years as a partner at Gordon Capital. In 1971, Douggie married the love of his life, Susan Elena Wallace. Susie and Douggie had many adventures together – building a ski chalet in Flesherton, a condo in Fort Myers, Florida and many years of loving refurbishment of their home on Scugog Island in Port Perry. Douggie was a collector of experiences. He and Susie travelled (Australia and New Zealand were a highlight), he was passionate about ensuring a commuter train for the Port Perry community, he loved classic cars and car meets and NASCAR. Douggie’s corvette brought him many hours of pleasure to drive and as part of the corvette community. Douggie became involved in the Scugog Island United Church and like everything he did – he became fully immersed. Douggie took on the role of lay Minister and Chair of Session where he delivered sermons and life events.
Douggie was a gregarious soul who gathered lifelong friends wherever he went – on his travels, in a bar, on the train, through the church or at the local hardware store or garage. Susie and Douggie’s many neighbours and friends became like family to them. He enjoyed spending time with Susie’s sister, Penny and her husband Bill. He was more than an Uncle to his niece Stacey and her husband Dean and nephew Bruce and wife Lesley. He delighted in his great nephews Christopher, Nicholas, Jackson and Alec. He will be missed by his dear friend Elizabeth. He loved his “fur babies” Opal, Pearl and Shadow.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, February 23, 2020. A service will be held at 1:00 pm at Scugog Island United Church followed by a reception at the Scugog Island Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made by cheque to Scugog Island United Church and the Uxbridge Scugog Animal Shelter.
