“Doug”‘s Obituary
Owen Douglas “Doug” Armstrong
1927 -2020
Owen Douglas “Doug” Armstrong – 93, Kingston, Nova Scotia went home to his Saviour on Sunday, September 6, 2020. He was born in Kingston on May 6, 1927 to the late Owen and Ida (Marshall) Armstrong. Doug was a loving husband and is survived by Pat, his wife of 71 years. Doug met Pat, who was the love of his life, while they were both attending Acadia University. He was a proud and devoted father to his five daughters, Dr. Rev. Ida Armstrong-Whitehouse (Gregg), Tantallon ; Darlene Armstrong (Rhys Wade), Sonoma, California; Bonnie (Bill) Spurr, Melvern Square; Colleen Armstrong-Shaw (Jim), Truro; and Pat Armstrong-Wilson (Bob), Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; grandchildren, Meaghan, Maia, Mary, Lisa, Melissa, Melanie, William, John, Joe, John, James, Sarah, Rhys and Cameron; as well as fifteen special nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren with two more on the way. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his two brothers and two sisters. Doug loved his Lord and walked through life as a faithful Christian and lifelong, active member of Kingston United Baptist Church, where his wisdom and guidance will be sorely missed. He was a compassionate and forgiving man and always had a kind word for everyone he met. He applied the tenets of his faith in all his dealings as a community leader and businessman. Honesty, integrity and keeping your word were very important to him and he instilled this in all of his children. They will remember him as kind, generous, supportive and encouraging in their education and life choices. He was a good listener and his best advice to them was that you can do anything with your life, if you are willing to work at it. His girls and grandchildren have fond memories of spending days with him at the shore, campfires, his original bedtime stories, arm wrestles, visits to the ice cream store, squeaky ear, “energy” pills and rowdy games of 45’s. He loved to celebrate holidays, birthdays and other life milestones while surrounded by his family and friends. Doug was a Gideon and carried a box of bibles and a box of apples in the trunk. He was always ready to offer anybody he met food for the soul and body (even an RCMP officer that had stopped him for speeding). Doug was a competitive sportsman that was always up for a pickup baseball game and played ice hockey well into his 70’s. He had a strong work ethic and built up and expanded his Kingston business, OH Armstrong Ltd which continues to employ hundreds of people in the area. Doug was a dedicated supporter of his faith, his church and a tireless volunteer in his community. He was a Sunday school teacher, superintendant and deacon for many years and a founding member of the Atlantic Ashram and Faith at Work. He was a faithful and generous supporter of Acadia Divinity College and countless charities. Doug was also involved in prison ministry and confirmed his personal belief in redemption and forgiveness by employing some of those men. He served as a volunteer firefighter, Village Commissioner, and worked on the Downtown Improvement committee, where he was involved in many community improvement projects. He supported and promoted community events such as the annual Kingston Steer Barbeque and was involved in Boy Scouts and founding the railroad museum in Middleton. He also was a supporter of Berwick United Church Camp and Kingswood Camp for many years. In 2012, Doug was recognized for his lifetime volunteer work and awarded the Queens Diamond Jubilee medal, which he humbly and gratefully accepted. Doug will be sadly missed and always fondly remembered by his family, friends and community. The family would like to give special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Soldiers Memorial Hospital. Due to Covid19 gathering restrictions a private family funeral, with Rev. Barbara Bishop officiating will be held in the Kingston United Baptist Church, followed by a private family only interment in North Kingston Cemetery. Live webcast of the funeral will be available for viewing through the funeral home website ‘Live Stream’ option beginning at 2:25 p.m. ADT, Sunday, September 20th, 2020. If so desired, donations in Doug’s memory may be made to Kingston United Baptist Church, Gideons, Kingswood Camp or a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St. toll free 1-855-825-3448. Online guestbook may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
