DOROTHY “MARIE” HEWEY
JUNE 29, 1935 – APRIL 17, 2020
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, Marie Hewey.
Left to mourn her passing are her daughters, Donna, Kathie, Sandra (Rennie) and her son Steve (Gisele). Mum was predeceased by our Dad, Walter “Don” on September 7, 2018. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Kevin, Brian, Laura, Christopher, Danielle and Sean as well as great grandchildren Ophelia, Clark, Charlie, Alec, Connor and Felix. She is survived by two sisters, Shirley and Madeline and three brothers John (Lynn), Bruce (Laurie) and Gerald (Nancy) as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Donna Jean (infancy), as well as four brothers, Harry, Charles Jr., Walter and Richard.
Born in Middle Stewiacke, NS on June 29, 1935 to Ruth and Charles Bates, Mum grew up in a small house with nine siblings, so therefore always loved having family and friends around. She met and married the love of her life, our Dad, on March 29, 1952 and their journey of 66 years of wedded bliss began. With Dad being in the Army, this included postings to Victoria, BC, Baden, ON, Soest, Germany and finally settling in Winnipeg in 1963. After Dad’s retirement, they moved to Anola for several years, then to Birds Hill and finally in full circle, back to Winnipeg in 2013.
As a young family, we all enjoyed fishing, and blueberry picking at Nutimik Lake, camping in a trailer that Dad built. Mum worked at Safeway for 22 years, where she met some very special people and cherished those friendships along her journey, into retirement.
Mum was a fantastic cook and baker, collecting many recipes over the years. Breads, potato salads, and baked beans were some of her most-requested dishes. She hosted many family dinners over the years, and truly loved being surrounded by her family. Her love of family is forever etched in the Family Memory Stone at Assiniboine Park.
Mum loved knitting, passing along blankets, hats, toques, mittens, and slippers to all of us. She also loved a good romance novel.
Upon retirement, Mum and Dad spent many months motoring extensively in their customized van across Canada, Alaska, and the USA. Whether visiting family and friends, attending country music concerts or just taking in the gorgeous scenery along the way, their trips were always memorable. Retirement also saw Mum and Dad attending Goldeyes games, walking the trails of Birds Hill Park, playing a game or two of Scrabble and going to the casino.
Mum will always be lovingly remembered for her warm cuddly hugs, vivacious smile, joyous laughter and above all, her classiness as she was always dressed “to the nines”
We take great comfort in knowing that Mum passed away peacefully under the wonderful care of the compassionate staff on the 3rd floor at Oakview Place Extendicare, a place she called home for the past two years.
Due to COVID19, a celebration of Mum’s life will be arranged at some point in the future when gathering is deemed safe.
In lieu of flowers, please consider offering a kind gesture to someone in need.
Mum, you will never be forgotten, and your memory will forever be cherished by so many.
“I Will Always Love You” (Dolly Parton)
