Obituary of Donald Dingwell
The family of Don Dingwell announces his passing on August 12, 2020. Don was born on September 20, 1930 on Mouse Island in Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland and he was the last person to receive a birth certificate from there — a point of great pride for him.
Don lived a life of adventure that took him from the fishing banks of Channel, Port aux Basques to the mainland, where he enlisted in the army and found his love, Eleanor. Together, the army took them to Germany, and they had many overseas adventures.
His four children: Donnie, Julie, Janet and Michael shared the adventure and loved him dearly. Lost earlier were his cherished wife Eleanor and adored son Michael. He leaves 4 grandchildren: Stephanie, Ryan, Bronwyn and Hanna and 2 precious great grandchildren, Quinn and Adele. Don has beloved sisters in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and New York who will miss him always.
Don was a prolific builder of folk-art schooners and his boats garnered great attention and are now in the homes of many corners of world.
Don lived the past several years at Carlton Kirk Senior Complex where he was their champion bingo caller and good friend to many. He leaves behind numerous good friends among them his great friend Mike Bane.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424). In respect of Don’s wishes there will not be a service. Instead, Don asked that you remember him by playing a good old Newfie tune. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA Saint John Animal Rescue League, CARMA or the charity of donor’s choice.
