Don was born in Whitbourne on November 27, 1937, the oldest of two sons to Bill and Muriel. He grew up in Whitbourne enjoying life in the great outdoors.
Upon completion of high school, he headed to St. John’s for training to become a Telecommunicator. In 1957 he moved to Gander and a year later went to work for Environment Canada at the Gander Weather Office until his retirement in 1992.
Whilst living in Gander he made many a trip back home to see the love of his life Deanna Hutchings and in 1960 they were married. In 1962 they started their family with the first of his two son’s arrival. The next twenty years he frequented many a rink and ball field all over the province with his boys. Along the way developing many friendships as he rarely missed an event his boys were involved in.
The outdoors was a passion as he hunted and fished, then in 1976 he cleared a piece of land and built a cabin at Butts Pond. His piece of paradise was second only to his love of his family and he cherished his time with family and friends at the cabin as the door was always open to everyone.
When Don retired, they embarked on a new adventure as they purchased a trailer and travelled the province exploring, and for anyone who knows Don he liked to drive around and burn gas!!! Eventually the trailer was sold, and time was spent at the cabin where horseshoes had been replaced by washers…
The next chapter began in 2008 with the arrival of their only granddaughter Rae who immediately stole his heart. He would dedicate many hours enjoying watching her grow as she introduced him to today’s technology of IPads and cell phones which provided many a laugh and frustration for those who witnessed these conversations.
Throughout the years he was involved in the Royal Canadian Legion, the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, Shriners, as well as a volunteer for a long period of time with Gander Minor Hockey Association.
Don was a wonderful husband who adored his wife a loving Pop who watched over Rae in his own special way, a friend to many and an awesome father!
He will be missed, but remembered and forever loved by those whose lives he touched……
