Donald Gordon Walls
March 19, 1934 – August 15, 2020
It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of Donald Gordon Walls announce his peaceful passing on Saturday, August 15, 2020 at the Red Deer Hospice at the age of 86 years. Donald was born in Edmonton, Alberta the oldest child of Gus and Mary Walls. As a youngster he learned the value of hard work, dedication to family and friends, and respect for others which he brought to all his endeavors. He was an avid Eskimo fan, and always wore his Edmonton pride on his sleeve wherever he went.
Donald met the love of his life, Shirley Collins in High School. They enjoyed over 58 years of marriage until Shirley succumbed to cancer in 2015. Their love and devotion to each other carried them through many good times and sustained them in challenging times. A self-proclaimed “Entrepreneur”, Dad was never afraid to try new ventures and was involved with many businesses over the years. He began his career at the Texaco Refinery in Edmonton, and when he tired of shift work 15 years in, he entered the world of sales and marketing working as a regional manager with Turbo Resources. This change brought the family to Red Deer, where Dad met many of his life-long friends. After stints in Kamloops and Lethbridge, Dad eventually joined Fas Gas, a company started by another of his very close friends. For the remainder of his career, he enjoyed working with many wonderful people in the industry he loved.
He understood the importance of developing personal relationships with those that he worked with, and he gave freely of his time volunteering with many organizations over the years. He was a proud member of the Red Deer Kiwanis Club and served as the club’s president in 1976.
He was always encouraging his family and told them frequently how proud he was of their successes. He will be sadly missed by his children, Neil (Kim) Walls, Cheryl Walls (Vince Mulhall) of Red Deer, Scott (Patricia) Walls of Lethbridge Alberta; his seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Donald will also be lovingly remembered by his sister Anne Ramme of Edmonton, Alberta, his sister in law, Kay
Cameron of Stellarton, Nova Scotia and his many friends. Although our family is disappointed that a memorial service will not be held at this time due to the current health restrictions, we encourage friends and family to keep dad close in your hearts and for those so inclined to “tip a little rumski” in his honor.
Our family would like to thank the caring nurses and staff at the Red Deer Hospital Palliative Care Unit, the Red Deer Hospice Society, as well as all staff at Victoria Park, Aspen Ridge and Timberstone Mews Seniors Retirement Homes. Your caring treatment of our father is greatly appreciated. If friends so desire, memorial donations in memory of Donald may be made to the Red Deer Hospice Society, an organization that Dad was a supporter of through the Twilight Homes Foundation and Kiwanis Club. Please call (403)309-4344 or donate online at www.reddeerhospice.com/donate1.
