Don Carroll, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at Chapman House, Owen Sound at the age of 89.
He will be missed by his loving wife Elisabeth, son Bill (Yvonne), daughter Ruthanne (Tony), son D.J. (Jacqui), and his grandchildren Ben, David, Tori, Syd and Tyson (Nicole) as well as his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by all of his siblings Marjory Carberry (Carroll), Willa Coarse (Carroll), Ken Carroll and Glen Carroll.
Don touched many lives – as an educator, community member, civic leader and friend. When he first came to Walkerton, he was teaching at Walkerton District Secondary School as the Head of Guidance and Vice Principal. Next, he went to work for the Bruce County Board of Education; then as principal of Chesley District Secondary School as well as Kincardine District Secondary School. His final job was as a Superintendent for the Bruce County Board of Education. In his various jobs, he pushed programs that supported kids of all needs, fought hard for the arts in schools and always believed in reading stories to children. He attended 100’s of graduations, school events and always had time to meet with parents and students. He was one of the major supporters and organizers of the Grey Bruce Children’s services and fought very hard to make sure support programs were funded.
Don was always involved in the community as a volunteer, leader or the organizer of events such as Chairperson for Easter Seals campaign, Member of the Rotary Club, Town Councillor & Deputy Reeve, Canada Day Celebrations, parades and fireworks in town for years, Chair of Homecoming, Hospital Board, Member of St Paul’s United Church, Honourary Member of Royal Canadian Legion. One of his strongest passions was the work that the Legion did to celebrate Remembrance Day. He would organize events at several cenotaphs each year and was the person who shuttled around trumpeters to do the music for the day.
A private family service will take place at Cameron Funeral Home, Walkerton on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. and will be livestreamed.
Interment in Walkerton Cemetery.
