Obituary
Dennis William Stevenson
November 8, 1936-July 19, 2020
Dennis passed away peacefully at Sechelt Hospital on July 19, 2020 at the age of 83 with his wife Margret at his side.
Dennis was born in Lowestoft, England, the eldest of nine children. He grew up during the difficult war years. At age 16, he joined the Royal Navy where he trained as a chief engine room artificer and travelled much of the world. His time spent in Iceland, Malta, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Falkland Islands shaped the man he became.
Dennis immigrated to Canada in 1968. He settled with his wife Nan (Agnes Purves) and two sons Dennis Jr. and Ian in Port Mellon. Two years after Nan’s passing, he met Margret and her two daughters Jennifer and Carolynn. Margret and Dennis were married in 1978 and welcomed Steve and Georgia into the family.
Dennis spent several years in Ontario working in a nuclear power facility for Ontario Hydro. After returning to the Sunshine Coast, he worked at Howe Sound Pulp and Paper as a Mechanical Supervisor, retiring in 2001.
Dennis was a good man in the truest sense of the word. He lived a happy and fulfilled life focused on family and friends. He leaves us with memories of his caring spirit, his dependability, his quick wit and his easy sense of humor. Dennis was a true gentleman, steadfast and loyal, and slow to anger. He took great pride in all his endeavors and accomplishments.
He found joy in the simple things in life – having a cup of tea, playing crib, darts, gardening, doing crosswords, walking to the end of the road, reading the newspaper, swimming in the ocean, watching his kids’ activities, and being with his family. After retirement, Dennis and Margret enjoyed many adventures travelling all over the world.
He had a deep love for his family and for the Sunshine Coast, and was loved and respected by everyone who knew him.
Dennis is survived by his wife Margret and her mother Elfriede (Petersen), children Dennis Jr., Ian (Doris), Jennifer, Carolynn (Christopher), Steve (Heather), Georgia (Travis), and his grandchildren Evan, Ben, Tanya and Daniel. Dennis had a special relationship with his nephews, nieces and all of his extended family. He’ll be missed by many on the Sunshine Coast, around BC, England and New Zealand.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Covenant House Vancouver in Dennis’ memory.
