It is with great sadness that the family of Dean Watson announces his passing on Saturday April 18th, 2020 at the age of 76.
Dean lived his life with great humour and commitment to his family and friends. He wore many hats in his life, most notably husband, dad, gramps, brother, uncle, teacher, and general jack of all trades. He was a much beloved and dedicated family man, who lifted up all who knew him with his humour and quick wit. Dean was the rock of support in his family and he will be especially missed by his wife Diane, his kids Kevin (Julie), Chris (Megan), and Callie, his grandchildren Kate, Eric, Jack, Bridget and Thomas, his brother Richard (Eleanor), his nieces and nephews, and his long time special friends. Dean is predeceased by his parents Dorothy and Keith Watson and sisters Barbara (E.J.) and Connie (Klaus).
Dean had an exemplary 30-year teaching career at Hamilton’s Sir Winston Churchill S.S. He held many different positions in the school, but his time as a Special Education teacher was where he really shined. He had a gift for connecting with others. Dean’s retirement years were filled with trips to Florida, stays at the family cottage near Minden, refereeing volleyball matches, being a neighbourhood handyman / landscaper, and of course spending time with his family. His commitment to helping others spanned his entire life.
Dean’s struggle with Alzheimer’s for the past few years was met with humour and stoicism. The family greatly appreciates the compassion and care shown by our friends and neighbours during that tough time. We also wish to thank the staff at both Sunrise of Burlington and the Burloak Long Term Care Home, Dr. Mah, Dr. Douglas, and the Alzheimer Society. All of you showed great care and support as you helped us through the difficult stages of this journey.
If desired, donations in his memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society or Joseph Brant Hospital.
No funeral or visitation will be held but, when possible, we will gather together to remember and celebrate the life of this special man. We will toast him, thinking of him paddling out in his canoe, softly calling “here fishy fishy”!
