Obituary
It is with deepest sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of David William Johnson (“Sam”), with family and friends by his side in his home on Friday, April 24, 2020.
Dad was born in Saint John, N.B. on October 17, 1936 and adopted at 6 months old. He loved and was loved by his family and is survived by his son, Eric and daughter, Natacha (Russ) Hutchings; grandsons, Kyle and Blake; granddaughters, Megan and Ally; half-sisters, Shirley (Munroe) Watson, Norma Boden, Donna Harquail, and Heather Kane. He was pre-deceased by his love and life partner, Alison Burwash; daughter in law, Therese Johnson; parents, Ralph and Grace (Wetmore) Johnson; half-brother, Clifford Munroe; and his birth mother, Edye (Spragg) Tuffy.
Dad grew up in Liverpool, N.S. and attended Liverpool High school and Horton Academy. He sailed for two years on the TSS Markland and SS Vinland. Dad served 30 years in the RCAF/CF as an Air Force Policeman in Canada and Europe. He was employed with the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires with the Canadian and US Navy in the Security Field at Nanoose Bay, B.C. until January 2014. He worked 63 years in the Military -10 years Liverpool Army Cadet Band, 30 years RCAF, and 23 years Navy.
Dad was a long-standing member of the Royal Canadian Legion; past member of the Masonic Lodge, past member and Commander of the Nanoose Power and Sail Squadron.
He loved boating, fishing, cooking, music of all types, travelling, gardening and working around anything that was a challenge. He took photos of everything he could. His mind was full of useless information and he was unbeatable at trivia! He knew his way around a good lobster and a fine bottle of wine.
No matter where he lived, Dad always considered himself a Bluenoser. He loved life and enjoyed every minute of it. One of his favorite sayings was “Its a great day when you wake up in the morning on this side of the grass.” His humor and special sayings are passed onto his children for their and others enjoyment.
Dad raised his kids on his own and we shared so many laughs and great times together. He was passionate about his family and the biggest hugger in the world. He had many friends that he shared lifetime bonds with. He was adored by his 4 grandchildren. He will be missed by so many; his laughter was plentiful and infectious. He loved to rant, and his stories were amazing. “All the days of your life have been the best of mine”.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “Military Police Fund for the Blind Children”.
