David Kimel
With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved patriarch and the bravest of warriors, David Kimel, on March 20, 2020. Loving, devoted husband of Rachel for 62 years; cherished father of Anita, Miriam, and Marcy; admired and respected father-in-law of Ian Gold, Dan Rosen, and Adam Kramer, who he treated like sons; adored Zaidy of Matthew, Spencer, and Lucas Gold; Carly, Lindsay, and Hailey Rosen; Jordan, Jill, and Brandon Kramer.
Those who knew our father knew that he loved to laugh and joke. He had a passion for singing and somehow managed to find a song to fit any occasion. He was happy to greet visitors with “Strangers in the Night” or “Besame Mucho.” But his favorite song was Oseh Shalom Bimromav – a prayer for peace; it meant so much to him, and his grandchildren loved to sing it with him.
Holidays were particularly important to our father. Every Passover began with Zaidy belting out “Let My People Go” in his best Moses voice. Anyone who has graced our holiday table knows that he led the Seder from the heart, shushing chatter and insisting on full participation. We all remember the night he started the new tradition of all of us singing the Mah Nishtanah together so that the youngest child would be let off the hook.
Our father loved to keep active. He was very athletic in his younger years, and later found a love for playing pool, swimming 3 days a week, and playing cards. He would never pass up the opportunity to go for a swim or play a hand or 12 of gin.
A favorite pastime of his was finding projects to work on around the house. When he wasn’t tending to his vegetable garden or cherry tree, you could always find him working in the garage. He loved to walk through the house in search of something that needed his attention. There was virtually nothing that he couldn’t fix with a handful of screws, some tape, and a spray of WD40.
Our father’s greatest source of joy was his family. With every visit you could count on him waiting outside to greet his grandchildren. He was always ready for them with chocolate or bubble gum from his secret stash.
While he looked on at his children and grandchildren with pride, his family was looking back at him with love, respect and admiration. He was hardworking and selfless – completely self-made and successful against all odds. He was a modest man, but to his family he was the greatest hero.
Our father will be lovingly remembered by his niece, Ellen Moss and his many other nieces and nephews.
As our family mourns, we take solace in knowing that the Kimel Family: our grandparents Ethel and Meyer Kimel z”l and their children, Miriam, Rivka, Abraham, Shlomo, Joel, and Rachel, are waiting with open arms to greet their beloved son and brother David, and will gather together for a feast fit for a king.
A private funeral will be held on Sunday, March 22. We love you Daddy, aka Doo, with all our hearts, forever and ever.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of David Kimel 2020..
