Darrell Shay
1956-2020
Darrell Shay, born on July 30, 1956 in Kentville, passed away
on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 in Dartmouth after a long battle with
Huntington’s disease. Darrel is survived by his two
daughters, Laura (Pedram) and Heather; his son, Kyle (Lori); sisters,
Theresa (Ron) Misner, Gladys Hiltz and Nancy (Brian) Paulin; brother,
Don (Eleanor); as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews. He is
predeceased by his wife, Linda Corbin-Shay; mother, Katherine
(Leblanc) Shay; father, Elroy Shay; sister, Sharon Durling, and
brothers, Daniel and Raymond. Darrell grew up in Kentville and
attended Central Kings High School where he met the love of his life,
Linda Corbin. After finishing high school, he attended Nova Scotia
Teacher’s College and Saint Mary’s University.
Although he didn’t work as a teacher, he was interested in
learning new things and was especially interested in local history.
Darrell married Linda on July 5, 1980 and they went on to have three
children. Darrell worked for many years as a forklift driver at
Loblaws. Darrell will be remembered for his sense of humor and
mischievous smile. He was a kind and fun-loving guy who was
immediately liked by everyone he met. Darrell had a huge passion for
music and would spend a lot of his free time listening to it,
especially classic rock and blues. He was an avid researcher and spent
many hours at the archives researching his family history. He also
loved sports of all kinds and would often be found cheering on his
favorite teams: the Maple Leaf’s in the winter and the Blue
Jays in the summer. In his later years, he had a zen-like quality and
would enjoy time sitting in the sun or simply observing the world
around him. Darrell was one of a kind and will be deeply missed by all
who knew him. A private funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m.,
Tuesday, December 22, 2020 in the White Family Funeral Home,
Kentville. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam
Mill. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, physical distancing and masks are
required. Donations in memory may be made to Huntington Society of
