Daphne M. (Seaman) Cullen
1918-2020
With heavy hearts, but also with gratitude for a life well
lived, the family of Daphne Marie (Seaman)
Cullen announce her passing on June 7th, 2020, at age
102, at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Amherst,
NS.
Daphne was born on January 31st, 1918 in Baie Verte, NB to
Minnie (Oulton) and Roland Gorveatt. She was pre-deceased by her
parents, a brother, Herbert (Bud) Gorveatt, her husband, Paul Cullen
and grandson, Andrew Phippen.
She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Phippen (Peter) and
Christine Cullen, and her son, Michael Cullen (Vicky), all of Halifax,
NS. She leaves four grandchildren: Gordon Phippen (Lynda), Oakville,
ON and Halifax, NS; Elizabeth and William Cullen, Halifax, NS; and
Hilary Cullen, Victoria, BC. She also leaves two great grandchildren,
Grace and Jamie Phippen, both of Oakville, ON and Halifax,
NS.
Daphne was a graduate of St. Charles Business School in
Amherst and was employed until 1955 by Simpson Sears Ltd. She was an
active, lifetime member of Trinity St. Stephen’s United
Church in Amherst as well as a lifetime member and past president of
the United Church Women at Trinity St. Stephen’s. She will
be remembered for her love of family and friends, her ever-positive
approach to life, even in the face of adversity, and her kind, caring
and generous spirit. She was blessed with musical talent and could
brighten any gathering with her ability to play the piano. In her
youth, she and her brother, Bud, on the piano and violin, played for
many family and community events. She was also a lifelong lover of
choral singing and organ music.
Daphne was a caregiver to her ailing parents and her beloved
husband during his years with Parkinson’s disease, and a
devoted mother/grandmother to her children and grandchildren. All this
she did willingly, and with love. She was also a superb cook and
always happy to be preparing something special for her family and
friends. Above all, Daphne was a woman of great faith who never
waivered in this conviction.
The family extends sincere thanks to the entire staff at
Centennial Villa in Amherst, where Daphne resided so comfortably for
the past four years. Sincere thanks are also sent to the Palliative
Care Team at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre and to Dr.
Kris Bienkowski for his attentive care as Daphne’s physician
of many years.
