Obituary
FURSETH, Dallas Leslie 1973-2020 – Dallas passed peacefully away at his home on June 19, 2020 with Alanna, his devoted wife and partner of ten years, by his side. Dallas was born at Elrose Hospital on July 1, 1973 to Leslie Furseth & Patricia (Phillips) Munro.
He attended school at Kyle, Elrose, and Swift Current. He worked on the oil rigs for Savannah Oil, and was a Top Drive Hand when he first became ill. Dallas thoroughly enjoyed working for Savannah Oil and really appreciated that they accommodated him for several months until he was no longer able to work. He was overwhelmed by and greatly appreciated the efforts of Savannah Oil and generosity of co-workers and friends when a fundraiser was held to help with his medical care.
Dallas was an avid athlete, competing as a bareback rider for many years. In 1999, he won first place for bareback at the Eastend Rodeo and in 2000, he qualified for the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboy Association (MRCA) finals for the first time. In 2001, he won the Amateur Bareback at the Kyle Rodeo and first place at the Rose Valley Rodeo. He won Amateur Bareback at the MRCA Finals in 2001, and he made the front page of the Brandon Sun when he was bucked off Red Feather during the opening event. 2002 was a dry season when Dallas broke his back at the Biggar Rodeo, but he worked on his comeback and in 2003, he placed eleventh in the CCA bareback standings. In order to try and make the top ten and make up some ground, Dallas traveled to the Beausejour Rodeo in Manitoba and placed third, finishing tenth in the standings, qualifying him for the CCA Finals. In 2004, with a brand-new rig and lots of practice on “Woody,” the spur board, Dallas won 2004 Kyle Rodeo Bareback, 2004 Herbert Stampede, and his crowning achievement, Champion Bareback Rider at the MRCA Finals in Brandon. This was his fourth time competing at the MRCA Finals and he had ranked third in the regular season bareback standings. He held on for a first, second, and third place ride in three performances to win his first MRCA championship saddle. He was forced into retirement from his sport of riding bareback horses in 2005.
On January 8, 1997, Dallas became a proud father when his only child, Justin, was born. In 2011, he met and fell in love with Alanna Bell, and they were married on January 22, 2013 at Punta Cana, Dominican Republic surrounded by family and friends.
Dallas & Alanna thoroughly enjoyed the rodeo life. His first rodeo in his electric chair was North Battleford Rodeo. In an interview with Kelley Byrne of Everything Cowboy.com on February 14, 2013, he shared, “It did not take long for me to realize that I was accepted as the same person I was when I left.” He was not treated any differently, he is still one of the guys — a cowboy and part of the “family” that embodies the sport. “I enjoy helping Alanna, learning with her, and just being there to support her with her sport.” Dallas & Alanna really enjoyed hosting jackpots at their ranch and he not only actively coached her, but he coached many young bareback and saddle bronc riders at the ranch as well as at rodeos.
Dallas volunteered as a Bareback and Saddle Bronc Director with the Kakayow Cowboys Rodeo Association (KCRA) and was presented with a bronze statue in recognition for his contributions to youth in rodeo.
On Christmas Eve 2014, Dallas was elated to receive a phone call from Sun 99.7 FM Country (www.highriveronline.com/sun-country-blog/cowboy-christmas-fun-) with a surprise arranged for him by Alanna, Mike Labelle, Dennis Halstead, Dan Katz (Okotoks GM), and Jake Vold — along with the Calgary Flames. The surprise was a chance to meet Dallas’ hockey hero, Brian McGrattan. Friday, January 2, 2015 was that special day. The surprise included an overnight stay in Calgary, watching the Calgary Flames practice, meeting Brian McGrattan, supper at the Saddledome with Dennis Halstead, Jake Vold and his girlfriend, Sarah, Mike Labelle, and Dan Katz, and then watching the Calgary Flames vs. New York Islanders game. Dallas was an encyclopedia of knowledge when it came to the breeding operation, DnA Quarter Horses, that he and Alanna owned and operated. Over the years their breeding stock, Dallas’ knowledge, and Alanna’s hard work have produced many fine quarter horses that bear the DnA brand.
Dallas was a huge hockey fan and his favorite teams were the Kyle Elks, Calgary Flames, and Toronto Maple Leafs. As long as Dallas was able, he wouldn’t miss a Kyle Elks game. He always had to be down in their corner before every game to encourage them and make sure they were ready to go!
Along with his wife, Alanna, Dallas leaves to mourn his son, Justin; his father, Leslie Furseth (Sheri Doll); his mother, Patricia (Phillips) Munro of British Columbia; his mother-in-law, Jeanette Abbott; his father-in-law, Rick Bell; his sister, Leann Halvorson (Keith) and their children, Keeley, Lars, and Levi; his brothers, James Furseth and Wyatt Furseth; his sisters-in-law, Amanda Waldner (Rick) and their children, Lucas and Thomas, Allison Leys (Darin) and their children Liam, Ella and Remi, and Ashleigh Hyatt (Ken); and by his uncles, Terry Furseth and Robert (Bert) Furseth. Dallas was predeceased by his grandparents, Arne Furseth in 1992 and Grace (Bull) Furseth in 1996.
Dallas planned his Celebration of Life and it was his wish not to have a “Covid Funeral.” With respect for Dallas’ wishes, his Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when everyone is able to safely gather together again.
