Dale Kenneth Foxall (1942 – 2020)
A Gentleman and a Scholar
Foxall, Dale Kenneth born June 6th, 1942 Edson, Alberta and passed peacefully in his sleep March 28, 2020 Victoria, BC. Dale was predeceased by his parents John and Kathleen Foxall and brother Ron, he is survived by his wife Lynne; two sons John (Rose) and Chris (Lisa); four grandchildren Shannon (Ive), Jordan (Danae), Dylan and Kingston; two great-grandchildren Luka and Leo; sister Carol Thomas (Bill) and many nieces and nephews. Dale was a loving and devoted family man who enjoyed golfing, fishing, travel and good conversation. All who knew Dale considered him a gentleman and a scholar.
In 1959 Dale graduated from Victoria Composite High School in Edmonton, Alberta. Later that year he would meet the love of his life while applying for a job as a truck driver in Edmonton, Alberta. The owner of the company was Jack Saywell, whose daughter Lynne, mentioned to her father that the man who just applied for the job was “nicely dressed”. The rest is history with Lynne and Dale marrying on April 6, 1963.
In 1971 Dale earned a Registered Industrial Accounting degree from the University of Alberta while still maintaining a job and supporting his family. In his fourth year Dale earned the Governor General’s Silver Medal award which is presented to the undergraduate who achieves the highest academic standing.
In 1968 Dale and his friends Bob Bolton and Dilsher Virk were involved in bringing in the first supercomputer into Western Canada. The Control Data 3400 was a 48-bit machine, 192KB of core memory and 0.7 MIPS. The company was Computer Data Processing (CDP) out of Calgary, Alberta and leveraged this supercomputer for processing seismic data from the oil field industry.
In 1973 Dale joined Nicholson Manufacturing in Victoria, BC as an accountant. In June 2000 he retired from Nicholson Manufacturing as Vice-President and General Manager World Wide after spending nearly 28 successful years in the manufacturing of heavy duty forestry equipment that was shipped around the globe. During his tenure at Nicholson, Dale travelled extensively throughout the world including USA, Europe, Russia, Australia and New Zealand.
After retirement, Dale took his family on a 4 week trip to Portugal and Spain shortly after the 9-11 tragedy in 2000. Golfing, history and relaxing at the beach were the main attractions during the trip.
During retirement Dale’s true passion was golfing with his friends and family. Dale spent over 15 years at Cordova Bay golf course and was Captain of the Men’s Club for some of those years. Dale then moved on to Bear Mountain where he served as Captain of the Men’s Club many years where he was well liked and respected. Dale and Lynne were one of the first members of Bear Mountain Golf Course and lived on the 18th fairway for nearly a decade. Over the years, Dale helped organize numerous golf trips across the Pacific Northwest for the Senior Men’s Club. These trips were loved and cherished by all who participated. Dale’s claim to fame was a hole in one at Bear Mountain.
Dale was always the first to volunteer his accounting skills whether it was for a strata council, treasurer, or golf tournament.
In the grand scheme of life, Dale’s battle with cancer was short, difficult, but peaceful in the end. Dale passed peacefully in his sleep under the care of his wife Lynne and family members. The battle was eased thanks to the relentless commitment of medical staff at the Colwood Medical Treatment Centre, the Cancer Clinic and the Community Services nurses (thank you Heather). Dale referred to his newly found GP, Dr. Coburn, as a “Peach of a Man” whose intelligence, knowledge, kindness and compassion helped Dale and the family make it through a extraordinarily difficult time.
