Passed away suddenly on Sunday, October 4, 2020, Cyril (Cy) Joseph Fowler aged 76 years. Cy leaves to morn his loving wife Donna Covey, his four sons David (Marylou), Jeff (Allison), Peter (Renée), and Andrew as well as eight beloved grandchildren Anna, Julie, Amelia, Sean, Nicholas, Michael, Sophie, and Bijou. Also leaving to morn is Cy’s sister Barbara (Roger Greenwood) of Ottawa, sisters-in-law Patty Fowler, Anne Marie Fowler, Irina Bialetskaia and brother-in-law Ron Carrigan as well as many loved nephews and nieces, and good and faithful friends. Predeceased by his parents Sarah (Byrne) of St. John’s and Joseph P. Fowler of Cupids, CB; his brothers Frank, Ron, David, and Noel, and his sister Margaret.
Cy was born in Cupids on March 18, 1944. He was proud of his heritage coming from a family of fishermen and sealers. Cy and Donna enjoyed many seasons cruising the waters of Conception Bay and Trinity Bay often visiting his ancestral roots of Brigus and Cupids. He enjoyed sharing his love of the water with friends and family.
Cy attended St. Bonaventure’s College in St. John’s and went on to pursue a life-long career in the mining and explosives business. He cut his teeth in the industry working on the initial Churchill Falls Hydroelectric project in the early 1960s and went on to hone his skills in supervisory positions in mining operations throughout Northern Manitoba. He returned home to Newfoundland as owner-operator of his own explosive business working in the mining, construction and offshore oil and gas sectors.
In his retirement, Cy continued to enjoy boating and growing his prized tomatoes. He relished friendly competition and banter of tomato abundance and size with mainland friends. A wonderful cook, Cy looked forward to Spring when he would he prepare his specialty – flipper pie. His annual flipper dinner was a highlight for friends and family – invitations were coveted. His prime rib ‘jus au Cy’ and Mongolian Lamb were a palates delight. He was a wonderful story teller whose stories brought laughs to all – no matter how many times you heard them. Cy was larger than life and we will miss him.
We would like to thank Dr. Ed Redmond for being there for Cy and Donna every step along the way during Cy’s brief illness. Thanks Ed.
Cy is resting at Carnells Funeral Home on Freshwater Road. Visitations are from 2:00 – 4:00pm and 7:00 – 9:00pm on Tuesday, October 6th followed by funeral service at 2:00pm on Wednesday, October 7th at Carnells. The service will be streamed online at www.carnells.com

Dear Donna and family,
I was shocked to hear of Cy’s sudden passing. I know the past several years have not been kind to Cy healthiest but he was such a strong man that he fought with every bit of strength he had. I know how much he loved you Donna. He was such a good friend of Les and in later years me, that it was easy to see his love in many ways. We loved him too. I pray he is at peace with no more pain or misery. He deserves that. My love to all of you.
