Obituary of Connie ‘Barbara’ MacAulay, New Waterford
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Connie ‘Barbara’ MacAulay on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Our loving and devoted mother and friend to all whose lives she touched.
Connie is survived by her sons, David (Candace), Toronto, Cordell (Alesha), Halifax; daughters, Deanna (Lyle) Harnish, Halifax and Barbie (David) Mossop, New Waterford; grandchildren, D.J., Brandon, Chloe, Connor, and Rory along with her great-grandson, Ryker.
Connie is also survived by her sisters, Tweedy Arsenault, Elaine (Sam) Abraham, Ann (Fidel) Stephenson, all of New Waterford, Aletha (Darrell) Grainger, Judy (Jim) Irvine and her adopted brother, Michael Chiasson, of Ontario; sister-in-law, Laura Chiasson, Ontario, Ann Chiasson, Calgary; brother-in-law, Donnie MacAulay, Halifax, along with her great friends, Roy and Joanne Hughes.
Connie was predeceased by her parents, Quock and Bernice Chiasson; brothers, Mickey and Sonny; sisters, Sheila, Dorothy, Pickles; and the father of her children, Dave MacAulay.
After finishing at St. Agnes School in New Waterford, Connie moved to Toronto where she married and worked several years for Bell Telephone. Later, she moved back to family in New Waterford where she loyally worked at Maritime Tel & Tel (now Bell Aliant) for 30 years. For many of those years, Connie was the Chief Shop Steward of ACTWU for Cape Breton. She would never back away from what she felt was injustice. If you were wronged, Connie was the person who would not rest until it was righted – many feared to be on the other side of the argument (and justly so). She was never afraid to speak the truth or fight for those she felt needed help – no matter the cost.
But first and foremost was her dedication and passion for her children and her family. Connie treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother. After retiring in 2004, Connie spent most of her days cooking and baking for her family, and others, with her beloved sister, Tweedy.
Her kind and generous nature always came to the forefront whenever someone was sick or in need. She will be sorely missed by all.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A celebration of Connie’s life will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the New Waterford Hospital and the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Online condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Connie
