Clyde Melvin Earle
1921-2020
Sadly, but with great comfort and knowing that
Dad’s end of life loneliness and pain is over we announce
the peaceful passing of our father and grandfather, Clyde Melvin
Earle, of Kentville, in the early hours of May 31, 2020. He is now
with his beloved wife, Grace, our mother. His passing marks the end of
an era, of a life, of our own history. Going into his 100th year Dad
was born on February 14, 1921 in Pleasant Lake, Yarmouth County, NS
and was a son of the late Lyman Sr. and Minnie (Spates) Earle. He was
the last living sibling of brothers Lyman, Ralph, Everett and Russell
and sisters Gertrude and Jennie, all whom passed ahead of him. At the
age of eighteen he began what would become a life-long career with the
Dominion Atlantic Railway, shoveling coal on the steam engines before
eventually becoming a train engineer, running the freight and
passenger lines between Yarmouth, Kentville and Halifax, retiring
after 43 years of service. One of Dad’s passions was
hunting. Dad’s exploits as a goose hunter are known far and
wide to hunters and non-hunters. Unsurpassed as a water fowler as well
as a bird hunter, Dad’s hunting prowess and skill are almost
legendary. He passed this passion of hunting on to his son but any
other hunter would be hard pressed to convince Dad to let them tag
along on a goose hunt. Dad’s true love was our mother Grace
(McGee) whom he met on a chance encounter at the BFM hospital after a
forestry accident. He spotted her as she was a nurse on his medical
floor and it was love at first sight. After a six-month courtship, Mom
and Dad were married at Kentville in 1949, their marriage lasting 61
years until her passing in 2010. We all said Dad would die of a broken
heart and we believe that. They had three children, Lynne (Frank)
Wolfville, Michael (Edna) Port Williams and Lesley (Carl) Centreville;
five grandchildren, Patrick and Jennifer Earle, Megan, Lauren and
James Sweet. Dad was a loving husband, father, a devoted Grampie to
his grandchildren whom he loved and he was a friend to many. He spent
his retirement travelling with mom and summers were spent at the
cottage with mom, family and friends at Medford Beach. Dad was a big
man in every way and a huge part of our lives. He has gone in peace
and his spirit will remain with us and all who loved him for eternity.
Cremation has taken place. Due to Covid-19, restrictions there will be
no service. A private family interment of Dad’s remains will
be held Tuesday, June 9th, 2020 in Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, NS.
Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova
Scotia. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family
Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville.
