Obituary
It is with immense sadness we announce the death of Christine Hope Nesdoly at the age of 64. She died peacefully on May 2, 2020 where she wished to be, in her home. Christine spent the last 11 months of her life courageously facing the inevitable outcome of an aggressive brain cancer.
Christine was born on June 5, 1955 in Porcupine Plain, SK. Most of her school life was spent in Shellbrook, SK, where she excelled in school and was a key member of the basketball and volleyball teams. She lost her mom at age 15 and assumed responsibilities that most teenagers would not have to, including caring for her younger siblings.
In spite of being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 22, in second year medical school at the University of Saskatchewan, Christine, as was typical of her, persevered. She completed medical school and went on to specialize in Internal Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax and sub-specialize in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Christine had a very successful career in Geriatric Medicine, practicing in Winnipeg MB, Kelowna, BC, St Joseph’s Hospital in Toronto ON and finally in the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the William Osler Health System in Brampton and Etobicoke, ON.
For Christine the most important part of life was her family. She raised two children with her husband while being the life and light of her nuclear and extended family.
Until a week before the diagnosis Christine was working fulltime as a Geriatric sub-specialist physician in the Division of Geriatric Medicine at William Osler Health System (Brampton & Etobicoke). She was a respected colleague and role model for many of her co-workers and a beloved doctor for her elderly patients and their families. She loved and respected them in return.
To say she is already deeply missed by family, friends, colleagues and patients is an understatement.
She is predeceased by her mother Marie Nesdoly (Brich) and her father Elias Nesdoly.
She is survived, and deeply missed, by her husband (of 35 years) and best friend (of 37 years) John Snelgrove, her beloved children Natasha and Justin, her siblings Stephen Nesdoly (Stefania Fortuno), Faith Nesdoly (Robert Wark), Nathan Nesdoly, John Nesdoly (Allison), her stepmother Ellen Nesdoly (Whelan) and her nieces and nephews.
She also loved, and was loved by, her large extended family, and many friends and colleagues, from coast to coast to coast in Canada.
To fully understand Christine, you only need to know two things. First, the lyrics to her “theme song”, adopted when she was diagnosed with MS, Trooper’s “We’re Here for a Good Time” (“Not a long time, So have a good time, The sun can’t shine every day”) and second, that she proudly stayed true to “my small town Saskatchewan roots”.
Thanks to the following Medical and Health Care professionals for their care of Christine and support of her family over the past 11 months: the members of the Division of Geriatric Medicine – William Osler Health System, Dr Mohamed Abu-Abed and the inpatient and ER teams at Brampton Civic Hospital, Dr Andrew Johnson and his team, Dr Paul Kongkham and his team at Toronto Western Hospital, Drs Barbara Millar and Warren Mason and their teams at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the PSWs from Right at Home Canada and the Palliative Care nurses from Bayshore Home Care Solutions particularly Jocelyn and Danielle.
A celebration of Christine’s life will be held at a date to be determined. We will update our website when that date is confirmed. In lieu of flowers, due to allergies in the family we ask, if desired that donations in Christine’s memory be made to the MS Society of Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society.
