At the age of 91 ½, Kay as her friends knew her, lived her life with grace, determination, fierce independence, and an undying and steadfast love for her family, and friends.
Kay succumbed to kidney failure at Peterborough Regional Hospital as she had journeyed there to receive dialysis treatment. She fought valiantly to stay with us, but in her frail state was unable to receive the treatment she required. Until December 6th, she had maintained her independence and lived a quality of life that we can all envy for a person in her 90’s.
She is predeceased by Ronald Wicks (1991) her beloved husband of 42 years, and her parents, Verna May and Clifford Harcourt. Kay is also predeceased by daughter-in-law Marilyn Hamilton-Wicks (nee Hamilton).
Kay is survived by her three children, Jane Wicks (Vernon West), David Wicks (Diana Tiessen), Jeffery Wicks (Cynthia Inch).
She is also survived by four grandchildren, Liam Wicks (Valeria Wicks, nee Rodezno), Drew Wicks, and Fraser Wicks, all sons of David. She is also survived by Gregory Hodges (Alice Hodges, nee Brown) son of Cynthia Inch. Kay was graced with six exceptional great grandchildren, Eoin and Norah Wicks, children of Liam and Valeria Wicks, and Grace, Silas, Atticus, and Ira Hodges, children of Gregory and Alice Hodges. They will all miss her loving thoughtfulness and the beautiful hand knit sweaters she made for everyone. She was still knitting two weeks ago, just prior to her hospitalization.
Her sudden absence from our lives is beyond words of grief, but she will continue to live in all of our hearts with memories of love, laughter, stoicism, and honour.
The family would like to thank the attending doctors and nurses at both Northumberland Hills Hospital and Peterborough Regional Hospital ICU for the tender and exceptional care they administered and for their flexibility with end of life family visiting.
Also the ongoing care from the PSWs (VON) that allowed Mom to maintain her independence until the final days of her life.
During these unprecedented times of the Coronavirus, there will be no funeral. A Zoom celebration of life is planned early in 2021. If you would like to participate, an update with details will be posted with MacCoubrey Funeral Home when plans have been finalized. Kay will be interred beside her husband in the spring of 2021 at Union Cemetery with a small immediate family ceremony.
Donations can be made to Cancer Research Society.
Miss Me But Let Me Go
When I come to the end of the road
and the sun has set on me,
I want no rites in a gloom filled room,
why cry for a soul set free.
Miss me a little, but not too long.
and not with your head bowed low,
Remember the love that we once shared,
miss me – but let me go.
For this is a journey that we all must take,
and each must go alone.
It’s all a part of the Master’s plan,
a step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart,
go to the friends we know.
And bury your sorrows is doing good deeds,
miss me – but let me go.
