Obituary
Carol Ruth Marchand (nee Reed) peacefully passed away Thursday October 1st at the Penticton Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
She is survived by her loving husband Emile, son Mark (Susan), daughter Rhea (John Cavelti) and her youngest daughter Teena (Randy Martin), her many grand and great grandchildren, her sister Francis de Bolt, and nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed by her many friends and extended family.
Carol was born in Dawson Creek where she met her husband Emile. In 1970 Carol and Emile moved to Terrace with their three children. Carol was a long time employee at the Terrace Safeway as the deli manager before retiring with her husband to Keremeos. Carol and Emile immediately fell in love with Keremeos and decided to spend their golden years enjoying the sunshine, fruit and great friends. Wherever they lived and throughout their travels, there were always many good times and boisterous laughter.
Carol never stopped battling her many illnesses. No matter how sick she was, she was always determined. When anyone else would have broken, Carol stayed strong. Through Carol we know what resilience and perseverance truly is. Carol never stopped going, she could run circles around people half her age. It was a difficult transition from that dynamic woman that could never sit down to battling idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and not being able to move without losing her breath.
For many years Carol volunteered at the Bargain Centre in Keremeos. She made many friends while always bringing a laugh and fun to the centre.
Carol created many crochet (animals, hats, scarves, slippers, dolls) and donated them to the senior centre to raise money for the facility as well as to her daughter Rhea’s fundraising efforts in Victoria raising thousands of dollars for charity.
Carol loved fishing and camping. She has bragged many times of the150 pound halibut caught on the chuck and the two 50 pound salmon on the Skeena. She spent many weekends fishing with Emile dragging along her three kids. In Carol and Emile’s retirement their never ending quest to find the ultimate lake with an abundance of trout was ongoing.
She had fond memories of riding her horse Judy as a child and loved all the dogs throughout her lifetime. On her daily walks around Keremeos she was known to carry treats to spoil all the local dogs, Carol was loved by many furry beasts!
Carol was an incredible cook! You never left her table without loosening your belt and gently rolling yourself home. You would often find her in her kitchen prepping for many hours cooking up a storm to feed the neighbourhood. Her skills also included incredible preserving/canning of anything and everything from the garden to the sea.
Another of Carol’s passions was her flower garden and her many hydrangeas, hibiscus, rose of sharon, lilies and jack manning clematis. Her favorite moments included many hours on her swing enjoying her flowers.
We were blessed by Carol’s amazing talents as a quilter, weaver, painter and seamstress. Growing up her daughters had the prettiest dresses and later on her grandchildren were dressed to the nines in her custom creations. We cherish all of her creations.
Her family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or the Canadian Celiac Association.
There will be no service planned at this time due to the current Covid situation.
Carol will be dearly missed, but knowing that she is finally at peace and without pain is our only consolation.
