Bruce Vincent Baker 19432020

Bruce Vincent Baker
1943-2020
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved
father, grandfather, and friend.
Bruce Vincent Baker – 76 of Oakland, Lunenburg County, passed away
from a brief illness with cancer on February 7, 2020 at
Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital.
Born April 14, 1943 in Halifax, he was the son of the late Spencer
Garfield Baker and Verna Leotis (Haughn) Baker.
Bruce is survived by his son, Bruce Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth,
Martin’s Point; daughter, Denise and her fiancé, Timmy
Tanner, Back Centre; grandchildren, Rachel and Nathan Baker; and
Kelsi-Rose and Ivy-Marie Tanner.
Bruce was predeceased by his loving wife and best friend, Gladys, his
brother Raymond Baker, his parents, and his wife’s parents, Karl
and Jean Oxner, to whom he was like a son.
Bruce started his career at Central Autobody in Dartmouth. His love
and knowledge of cars brought him to a life time career as an
Insurance Adjuster with Canavans Insurance Appraisals until his
retirement.
He was not quite ready to stop working so he became a warehouse
delivery driver for Stelia North America for a few years.
As an active member of the Mahone Bay Legion he participated in
community events where he fostered many close friendships. Bruce was
also a past member of the Mahone Bay Fire Department.
He was an avid musician who met countless friends along his musical
journey playing with local artists and in various bands such as The
DeHavillands, The Eastern Four, Music City, Private Collection, and
most recently The Centurians and the St. John’s Lutheran Church
Band in Mahone Bay.
Bruce was also a long time member of the South Shore Blue Grass
Association.
He had a kind, charming, friendly and fun nature, with a helping hand
for everyone. He often would be just one of the boys hanging out at
camp with his son, grandson and friends, four wheeling and
snowmobiling with his son in law, or chatting in a garage.
His daughter was his little girl even in her adulthood. He loved his
family, adored his grand children and enjoyed time spent with his many
friends.
Always young at heart he often joked that his body would not allow him
to keep up with all the crazy things his mind wanted to do.
He was full of creativity and could fix or tackle any challenge, big
or small. He enjoyed working on cars (especially corvettes), tinkering
in the garage, the outdoors, camping, his bass guitar, music, and
happy hour.
He was a big man with a warm heart.
The family would like to thank his care support team for their
compassion and support during this difficult time: Dr. Weeks at QEII,
Dr. Robertson and staff at SSRH, Dr. Gowan and the Palliative Care
Team, and Dr. McAuley and the wonderful FMH 2nd floor medical
nurses.
Thank you also to friends who have reached out with love and kindness
to support us. It is heartwarming to know that our Dad was loved and
liked by so many.
There will be no visitation or funeral service at this time. A
graveside service and a Celebration of Life will be held in the
spring.
Donations can be made to the Mahone Bay Legion or the Canadian Cancer
Society.
Arrangements entrusted to the care of Mahone Funeral Home, 32 Parish
