Brian Joseph McGean
Sydney Mines
“A family is a circle of love, not broken by a loss but made stronger by the memories. We are forever blessed that God connected us to you.”
Brian passed away suddenly at home on Saturday April 18th, 2020 with his loving wife, Rayeanne, at his side. He was the youngest child of the late Howard and Frances (Hoskins) McGean, born on August 3rd, 1957 in Sydney Mines. He is survived by his wife, Rayeanne LeBlanc of Sydney Mines, his much-loved stepchildren, Vicki (Doug), Brigid and Tony and his beautiful grand daughter, Zora. Brian is also survived by his loving siblings, Estelle, Heather, Rachael (Dave), Sharon, Jackie and Gerard, his mother and father-in-law Shirley and Doug LeBlanc, sisters-in-law Dee-Ann (Blair) Maltby and Maureen McGean, many nieces and nephews and cherished friends. Besides his mom and dad, Brian was also predeceased by his siblings, Kevin (died in infancy), Basil and Colleen, nephew Kevin as well as brother and sisters-in-law, Norman, Neila and Leona.
Brian began his banking career with Household Financial Corporation, North Sydney in 1978 followed by a transfer to Halifax where he went on to work with Scotiabank for over twenty years. Finally, in 2000 Brian was able to move back to the home of his heart, Cape Breton, working as manager of the Princess Credit Union for the next twenty years.
Brian has been a very involved and passionate member within his community serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Northside Homemakers Service, Miners Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines & District Community Center and Kinsman Day Care Center. He was also a member of Branch 8 Legion, Sydney Mines. He has been a member of the Knights of Columbus (Santa Maria Council 2024) for over forty years, a 4th degree Knight, Past Grand Knight and most recently Financial Secretary. At The State Level, he was a Past State Deputy.
Above and beyond, Brian was a man of integrity always providing unconditional love and support for the people and things he believed in. He loved his family and friends fiercely. He was an unsung hero, always helping and giving within his community whenever and wherever needed. Nothing he liked better than sitting at his favorite summer hangout, Frankies Pond, telling a few stories to whomever was willing to listen. He loved the simple things in life and was eagerly anticipating a retirement of relaxing at home, travelling with his family, tinkering in his yard and garage but most importantly spending so much more time with his cherished family and friends. We will miss his wisdom, strength, presence, treasured memories we have shared, but most of all his unconditional love for each of us.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Brian’s life will take place at a later date.
