Obituary for Bessie Lieuvina Hellquist (nee, Stewart)
As we mourn, the angels rejoice. She heard the call for suppertime in heaven….
Bessie Lieuvina Hellquist was born in Metiskow, Alberta on February 10, 1924 to Gladys and Leslie Stewart. She went to be with her Lord & Saviour on October 15, 2020 in the QE II hospital in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
She lived her early years on the farm near Metiskow with her parents and 6 sisters and 2 brothers. After completing grade 8 in school, she left home and worked for the Kvill family assisting around the home and with the children. After this she worked briefly in the Lethbridge Hospital.
Bessie married Eyvind Hellquist, her returned soldier, on December 29, 1945 in a quiet ceremony at her parents’ home in Metiskow. They lived in Metiskow for the first few years of their marriage, then moved to Amisk, Alberta before moving to Worsley in 1961. In the fall of 1979 Eyvind and Bessie relocated to Grovedale, Alberta. After Eyvinds passing, Bessie moved into Grande Prairie where she resided until she passed away spending the last three years in Wild Rose Manor.
From her teenage years Bessie was active in the church – teaching Sunday School for many years, mentoring young women and always helping where needed.
She is survived by her children; Caroline (Lyle) Jones, Hope (Glen) Hoover, Rebecca (Dale) Watson, Darrell (Shirley) Hellquist, Elvina (Ken) Gagnon, Charity (Tony) Maltais, Paul Hellquist, son-in-law Gerry Fraser, 22 grand children, 43 great grand children & 5 great-great grand children, 3 sisters & numerous nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Eyvind, daughter Joy, granddaughter Tracy, great grandchildren Lief, Finnigan & Talia, her parents, 2 brothers & 3 sisters.
A private family Graveside Service will be held October 20, 2020 at Worsley Alberta.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents at Wild Rose Manor for their care and friendship to mom. Also heartfelt thanks to Dr. Bartie for the care he gave mom over the years, thank you to Dr. Maxwell & Dr. Barreth for their compassionate care and family support in Mother’s last days and a huge thank you to the nurses on Five North at the QE II hospital for their tender and loving care given Mother during the time she spent there. They went above and beyond their regular duties.
