Obituary of Beryl Eunice Gelinas
BERYL EUNICE (VICKERY) GELINAS passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at the age of 99 1/2 years at St. Mary’s Health Care Centre, Trochu, Alberta.
Mum was born on June 20, 1920 at Trochu, Alberta, to her parents, Ernest and Gertrude (Burroughs) Vickery. She was raised on the family farm northwest of Trochu and attended Hogadone School, 1 1/2 miles north of the farm. Mum enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and helping her Dad and brother with the farm work.
On June 18, 1947, Mum married Paul Gelinas and they moved to his newly purchased farm near Arthurville School, 7 1/2 miles away. There they raised three children. Mum worked hard growing huge gardens, canning, baking and volunteering in the community. We didn’t have power until 1960 and no running water until 1967 when we moved a mile south-east to the farm previously owned by my Dad’s Uncle Romeo.
Mum enjoyed life on the farm and had a green thumb when it came to growing things, especially the numerous house plants she always had around the house.
Mum and Dad retired from farming in May 2012 when they moved into Trochu, making their new home in St. Mary’s Lodge. In October 2015, Mum moved to the Long-term Care floor of St. Mary’s, where Dad was residing.
Mum’s wit, sarcasm, teasing and sharp mind never left her. Her favourite pastime was having her television on and working in her “Find the Word” puzzle books. Any day her grandchildren and great grandchildren came to visit was when she was happiest.
Our family would like to thank Dr. Bank Jaiyesimi (Dr. “Jay”) and the staff members of St. Mary’s who showed Mum compassion and understanding and gave her loving care.
Mum is survived and will be greatly missed by her loving children: daughter Paulette Gelinas (Garry Tetz), son, Ernest Gelinas (Ann Hargreaves), son Lyle Gelinas (Beverly Lloyd). By her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Andrew Tetz (Lesley Hodgson) Tristan and Karyssa; Steven Tetz (Tricia McKenzie) Logan (Cameron McDonald), Kegan and Calli; David Tetz (Sarah Huff) Landon and Gavin (and their mother, Stefanie); Shauna (Shawn Diggins), Kylie, Avery and Hayden; Christina (Richard Hoppins), Ella, Bailey and Kathryn; Clayton Gelinas (Kathy March) Alexis and Rylan; Clifford Gelinas (Sonja Resendes) Kaitlyn and Katrina.
Mum was predeceased by two infant daughters, her parents, her husband, Paul in January 2017 and brother, Richard (Dick) Vickery in January 2019.
